_____________________________________________________________________________
Central Focus/Big Idea: Students will learn the different parts of a plant and what a plant needs
to survive.
Subject of this lesson: Plants
Grade Level: Third
NC Essential Standard(s): 3.L.2.1 Remember the function of the following plant structures as it
relates to the survival of plants in their environments:
Roots- absorb nutrients
Stems- provide support
Leaves- synthesize food
Flowers- attract pollinators and produce seeds for reproduction
Next Generation Science Standard(s):
21st Century Skills: Learning and Innovation skills are used in this lesson because the students
are to use creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Life and Career Skills are also used in
this lesson because students have leadership and responsibility in this lesson.
Academic Language Demand
Language Function: The students will know the different parts of a plant and will know
what plants need to survive.

Instructional Objective: Students will be able to identify the parts of a plant and know what the
plants needs are to survive. The students will be able to successfully answer 4 out of the 5
questions on the homework given in the evaluate phase of this lesson.

Prior Knowledge (student): This is the introduction to this topic for students.

Content Knowledge (teacher): The teacher should have already went over the power point so
she is aware of what is on the power point. She should have already watched the video as well as
having clear understanding of it. Also, the teacher should have an example of the activity they
are going to be doing so they can have an idea and see what the activity is.
Accommodations for special needs (individual and/or small group): I will make sure that the
students with special needs will be moved to the front of the classroom where they can see the
power point that I present and be able to focus better. I will make sure to keep a close eye on
them and observe them more closely than the other students.

A computer where I can play the power point and the video/song called The Needs of a
Plant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUBIQ1fTRzI
Smart board
3 bags of potting soil
1 bag of grass seed
25 nude knee highs
25 clear plastic cups
A worksheet with 5 questions checking for understanding (25 copies)

Total Estimated Time: 1 class period

Source of lesson: Pinterest
Safety considerations: I will make sure that the students are careful and aware of their
surroundings when making the grass heads. Also, I will remind the students to be careful using
any other equipment in the classroom.

Content and Strategies (Procedure)

In your procedure, be sure to include all of the following 5 Es. Your procedure should be
detailed enough for a colleague to follow. If you will be relying on technology (e.g., a YouTube
video), describe your back up plan thoroughly. Imagine your most novice colleague needing to
teach from your plan. Dont just answer the questions. Additionally, I expect you to include
possible questions you could ask for each section. This needs to include higher-order questions.
Engage: The teacher will have all the students get out their science notebooks. The teacher will
begin the power point that is on parts of a plant. The teacher will begin by asking the students,
Does anyone know a part of a plant? The teacher will begin the power point stopping after
every slide and telling students to write down the parts of the plants and functions in their
science notebooks.
Slide 2: Tell students the four parts of a plant.
Slide 3: Explain to students that one part of a plant is called roots and talk about its functions.
Slide 4: Explain to students that another part of a plant is called the stem and talk about its
functions.
Slide 5: Explain to students that another part of a plant is called leaves and talk about its
functions.
Slide 6: Explain to students that the last part of a plant is called flowers and talk about its
functions.
Slide 7: What do plants need? Tell students there are five things that a plant needs to survive and
watch a short video about plants.
Slide 8: Activity: explain to students that we will be doing an activity and tell them the directions
in doing it and ask students if they have any questions.
Explore: Students will go back to their seats and wait for directions for the activity. Before
beginning the activity I will ask students (What are the five things a plant needs to survive?) I
will explain to students that we are going to be making our own grass heads today and we will
need to remember the five things a plant needs to survive because we will use that information to
take care of our grass heads. Students will make their grass heads while I am walking around the
room helping anyone that needs help with anything.
Explanation: The students will continue to work on their grass heads. The teacher will walk
around and make sure that all the students understand why we are doing this activity today. I will
walk around and ask students while they are working on the grass heads to tell me one thing a
plant needs to survive and grow. I will explain to the students that they will have to use these five
things to take care of their grass heads. The teacher will make sure students put the grass heads
somewhere with sunlight, and tell them they will have to water them every other day.
Elaborate: The teacher will tell the students to get out their worksheet when they are done
working on their grass head. The students that are done early will work on this worksheet that
has five questions all relating to the power point. If students do not finish grass heads early then
they will take the worksheet home and complete for homework.

Evaluate:
Summative Evaluation: Have students tell the teacher the different parts of a plant. Also students
will tell the teacher what are the needs for a plant to survive. This is a way to check the students
understanding to make sure they understood the lesson.
Formative Evaluation:
The questions the teacher asked throughout the entire lesson and the observations the teacher
made while walking around the classroom during the activity. The teacher will check for
understanding from the 5 questions given for homework.
To be completed after the lesson is taught as appropriate
