(SWBAT)

By the end of this class, students will be able to individually answer multiple

Big Idea

The human organism depends on the interactions between its multiple organ
systems.

Subject Specific
Competencies

Understands the scientific principles underlying the issue.

Progression of
Learning Topics

iii. Tongue
Describes the function of the taste buds on the tongue (transformation
and transmission of flavors: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, umami)
iv. Nose
Names the parts of the nose involved in smelling (nasal cavity, olfactory
bulb)
Describes the function of the olfactory bulb
v. Skin
Describes the function of the skin's sensory receptors (transformation
and transmission of feelings of pressure, temperature and pain

Materials needed

Copper wire
Hot bath
Ice bath
String
Fine-Point pens
Skittles
Lab Worksheets
Evaluation Worksheet

Context

Students have learned about the structure and function of the Central and
Peripheral Nervous System
Last class students learned about the first two sense, vision and hearing.

Vocabulary

Sensory Receptor picks up stimuli and transforms it into nerve impulses.

Umami A savory taste often associated with meats and vegetables.

Learning Activity #1: PowerPoint Notes

The PowerPoint will be covering the following topics:
Layers of the skin and their properties
Epidermis, Dermis and Hypodermis
Function of the sensory receptors of the skin
Anatomy of the Nose
Nasal Cavity and Olfactory bulb highlighted
Anatomy of the Tongue
Taste Buds
How the nose and tongue work together to create tastes.
Quick review of the sensory receptors we have covered in the last 2
classes.
To help students take down the notes, I will be providing them with some of the
pictures in my slides that they can add labels to.
Learning Activity #2: Taste/Smell/Touch lab
There will be 5 setups of 2 different labs around the room. I will give a brief
explanation of each lab before we begin. Students will be in groups of 3 and will
choose their lab partners. They will then be assigned to a starting lab. They will
have 10 minutes before they move to the next station (I will put a timer on the
projector so they can keep track of time.)
The first lab is the taste/smell lab. Students will test how well they can guess
what they are tasting with their eyes closed. They will taste first with their nose
unblocked, then with their nose blocked to see if smell really does affect their
ability to taste. They will be tasting skittles and will have to guess the flavor.
They will then have a couple of questions to answer about their results.
The second lab is the Touch lab. Only one member of the group will be the
subject for this lab. The other two group members will be either the tester or the
recorder. In this lab, the students test their ability to feel touch, hot, cold and
pressure with their eyes closed. They test the back side of their hand and the
underside of their wrist to see which one is more sensitive. The tester will lightly
touch the subjects hand with a string for touch, a cooled or heated piece of wire
for hot and cold, and a fine-point pen for pressure. They will then have a couple
of questions to answer about their results.
At the end of the lab, we will take a couple of minutes to go over their results as
a class. We will discuss any differences or surprises they had in their results.

Learning Activity #3: Kahoot Online Review Quiz

Kahoot is an online interactive quiz making tool. Students can get access to the
quiz I have created by going to www.kahoot.it and entering a specific PIN. This
PIN changes from day to day so I will have to give it to students right before we
start the quiz. I will ask students to use their personal electronic devices to take

part in the quiz. Two students or groups of students will be able to use the
computers in the back of the classroom. If someone does not have access to an
electronic device, they will be paired up with someone who does. Students get
points if they get the right answer. The amount of points they get depends on
how fast they answer the question. This will give students a fun and competitive
way to review what we learned today before they are asked to do the
assessment on their own.
This is the second time I will be using Kahoot with this group. The last time went
very well but there was too much calling out of answers and loud talking in
between questions. This time I will explain to them beforehand that I expect
them to follow the regular class rules during this activity so that we can get
through it smoothly.
The kahoot will contain questions from both todays class and last weeks class
on vision and hearing

12:10 12:20

Assessment:
Students will be given a worksheet containing several multiple choice questions
about the 5 senses we covered over the last 2 classes. They will be asked to
answer the questions by themselves. They can start their homework if they
finish quickly.
Homework: Workbook p.121-128 and finish worksheet package.
This will be due on March 16th

Differentiation

Students will be able to use test the information they learned in the PowerPoint
with a hands on lab activity.
Students will have a chance to practice answering multiple choice questions in a
stress free environment before being assessed.

Target Professional
Competencies

To evaluate student progress in learning the subject content and mastering the
related competencies.

Reflection

Overall I think this was an effective lesson. Giving the students the slides to
write on and follow along was definitely helpful. I will be adding better visual
indications of where the stuff I am talking about is in the pictures on my slides.
This should give students a clearer understanding of the anatomy of the skin,
tongue and nose. I still need to work on my pacing during note taking activities. I
am comfortable when I can flow from slide to slide presenting the information. I
know they have difficulty listening to and understanding me if they are writing. I
should be stopping before each slide to give students time to write down the
information before I start talking. The notes may take a little longer this way, but
their understanding of the material will be much greater.
The labs went very well and I think I managed the time effectively. I think my
explanations before the labs was clear and most students only need a few
clarifications on what to do before the got started. I really like the suggestion to
keep a central record of the data that the students collect. This will give them a
better understanding of the bigger picture and make it much easier to go over
the results as a class after the lab. When I do these labs again, I will have

students write a hypothesis for each lab before starting, so that they are testing
their own theories.
This was the second time I did a Kahoot activity with this class. It went much
better this time. Making it clear that I expected them to follow the normal class
rules during the activity and having a prize at the end made them focus on their
own answers and take the activity a little more seriously. They love this activity
and I will be using it again in the near future.
The multiple choice quiz was an alright assessment of what they had learned.
However, they struggled a bit with the material we had covered the class before.
I think I will split it into 2 smaller quizzes next time and give one at the end of
each period on the senses.
