Comparing and Contrasting Mitosis and Meiosis

Mitosis Diploid parent cell replicates DNA then divides once to produce 2 diploid somatic cells that are
identical to parent cell. Mitosis is related to asexual reproduction and chromosome number stays the same.
Meiosis - Diploid parent cell replicates DNA then divides twice to produce 4 haploid gamete cells that are
different from parent cell. Meiosis is related to sexual reproduction and chromosome number is cut in half.
In other words: Mitosis:
Type of division
DNA Replicates before cell
divides?
Parent Cell Haploid or Diploid?
2n or n?
Daughter cell Haploid or
Diploid? 2n or n?
# of divisions
# of daughter cells produced
Type of reproduction?
Stability (identical) or variation
(different)
Somatic or gamete
How does chromosome number
change?
