Escape TV .. a very moving story Britons have become obsessed with the dream of moving abroad to start a new life, and TV shows telling us how to do it are more popular than ever. Why are we so keen to leave, asks Sara Wheeler? Barely a night goes by without a television programme showing people who either long to escape from Britain or who have already done so. Take Channel 4's hugely successful Place in the Sun, for example, in which former estate agent Amanda Lamb shows potential buyers around a range of foreign properties.[9]_] ‘These ‘escape TV’ programmes represent Britain's most successful new theme in factual television, and, ifthe viewing figures are anything to go by, a large proportion are desperate to get away. [20] ‘The dream of living in a rural setting somewhere in ‘mainland Europe has long been a British national fantasy. When Peter Mayle tapped into it with his book AA Year in Provence, he sold millions of copies and the lanes around his old stone farmhouse at the foot of the Luberon mountains were soon jammed with tourist coaches. [23]”] He wrote it to earn enough money to buy a tractor, and ended up with a bestseller. But it's not all lazy afternoons for people who pack up ‘and head abroad. Many see their dreams turn into nightmares before they've finished unpacking. Living the Dream featured two couples from Basildon who sold up to run a B&B in Almeria, Spain. [f2]_] A Place Jn the Sun once showed a British official in Benidorm warning that British-owned bars in the resort have a failure rate of 95 per cent. This, of course, is the appeal of escape TV— the risk of failure, and the nasty pleasure we feel as we witness ster unfolding on the Costa Brava. And, according to the unwritten rules of escape TY, you must be sel ‘employed, and preferably want to do something fun ~ running a bar, for example, is ideal. [13 The persistent appeal of finding the good life abroad begs an obvious question: Why can’t British people find the good life in their own village or town? The weather is, of course, a key factor. You never see programmes about beginning a new life in Finland, Similarly, the ideal new life is always to be found close to the countryside, far from traffic jams, superstores and concrete. [f@]_|They had their ups and downs, but, in the end, they said that the only thing they missed was a Chinese takeaway. It seems this escape fantasy is peculiarly British, ‘American networks are not busy producing shows about Mexican villas as the US equivalent of 5's Dream Holiday Home. Yet the phenomenon is not restricted to westem Europe. [§5]_] Amanda Lamb has even been showing people around the ‘Romanian Riviera’. Itis, of course, all based on an illusion. Change your surroundings, we think, anu yuu Lau liauige yout destiny, or at least cast off the bits of your life that you don't like and replace them with a few nicer ones. Well, dream on. You can go to the very ends of the earth, to a paradise untroubled by human footprints, and you'll still find someone vaguely Familiar waiting patiently for you there: yourself, And do you know what? DAccording to Escape to the Sun, BBC's documentary series fronted by Pop idol judge Nicki Chapman, a whopping 15,000 Britons own homes in the Orlando area of Florida. Unit Test 2 Exercise B Presenter: With the holidays fast approaching, many of our younger Ksteners wil bs making plans for ta ‘summer. Here to tell us about a different kind of holiday is Mary Davenport, Welcome, Mary Mary: Thanks, Brian. Presenter: Now Mary, your company organises working holidays, doesn't i? Mary: Thats right, yes. Presenter: Can | start, maybe, with a rather cheeky question... why on garth would teenagers want to work during their holidays? Mary: Well, | suppose some people might worry about ‘that! But don't think that our holidays are all work and no play! We don't force people ta do hard physical labour or anything like that. | started the company because | had heard 60 many teenagers complaining that they were bored on holiday - that they cnt have anything to do, Presenter: You mean that they were just siting on the beach all day and it wasn't very exciting? Mary: Yes. That and the fact that they were not able to ‘spend ther time with others ofthe own age. Going on holiday with your parents is fine, but sometimes parents, and teenagers want to do dilerent things — and teenagers especially get bored doing what their parents want fo do, Presenter: So toll us about the holidays you offer, What Kind of work is it? Mary: Wel, our most popular holidays are ot summer camps. Teenagers join the camp and the work they do involves looking alter younger children ~ supervising ‘them on walks, playing games with thom, that sort of thing, They get paid a smal amount of money. And, of course, they have free time to enjoy themselves with people ther own age as well Presenter: What other things can they do? Mary: There are so many! A lot of young people care ‘about the problems facing the planet, so wo've organised several holdays where they actualy do things. to help the environment. Presenter: Such as Mary: Such as cleaning up beaches or rivers. That's great because i's outside in the open air, so its heathy, and after a morning's work you really work up a healthy appetite Presenter: Sounds fun! Mary: Then there are some which are quite hard work. Paanting trees, for example, after there's been a fire. That is tring, and you have to be quite ft, but if you ask any of the teenagers who've been on one of these holidays, ‘they'l tell you that it's a lot more fun than going to the gym Presenter: Mary, i all sounds really great. 'm sure there are lots of people out there who would love to try @ ‘working holiday. Thanks for coming in today. Before we 90, just toll us how listeners can find out more information, Mary: Very simple. We're on the internet. Just go to wwew.working holidays, ‘Speaker 1: For me, my washing machine is the one electrical appliance in the home that | think is the most necessary. | used to take everything to the launderette to get it washed, but it's much easier to do it at home. It's {getting od now ~ I've had it for over ten years ~ and it doesn’t always work so well and | have to keep gelting it repaired, so | think it's time | bought a new one. They tell ‘me that modern machines are even better, with all the ‘new technology, and they hava invented inteligent ‘machines which immediately know how many clothes you've put in. That all sounds a bit complicated for me, but as jong as | can just press a button and let the machine do the work, I'lbe happy! ‘Speaker 2:1 think the best thing | ever did was to buy a hifi for each of my three children. You'd think that having three stereo gystems in the nouse — four if you include mine — would got a bit noisy. Well i's true — sometimes, i they're all at home and in therr rooms, they sort of compete with each other to see who can be the loudest. But believe me, that's nothing compared to the arguments | used to hear. The fights they used to have over who was going to use the fami stereo! “it's my turn!" *No, i's not = you had it yesterday!” So now the house is mare peaceful. I's a kind of noisy peace, if that’s possible, but i's much better than it used to bel Speaker 9: | ealy want to get a big widescreen television. Ive been asking my dad for ages about this. Some of my friends have got one and its just fantastic to sit there and watch a fm. Horror fims are best ~ you really got involved inthe action and it can be teriyngl But football is also amazing. It's so useful... for old people who don't ‘want to cook every day .. for big families... for people living alone ... for everyone! | couldn't lve without one. f don't always want to eat when everyone else eats, so | ‘can just heat up a plate of food when I'm hungry. And that’s why we called! it ‘Nature Now, What's on each programme depends very much on what's happening in nature at that time. You see, changes to the cimata, such as global warming, ‘mean that things are happening at different times. The seasons are not predictable anymore, We might have snow in June this year! We don't know how much its affecting us but scientists believe that ‘may shorten our lives by up to ten years. People always bblame the increased traffic in urban areas.
