Title: Density, Volume and Mass Lab Report

Research Question: What is the density of 8 objects in the science kit?

Hypothesis:
Control
Dependent Variable
Independent Variable
Equipment:
100mL graduated cylinder
balance
cylinder block & square block
small hook, screw hook, hanger hook, drill hook
washers (varying amount)
1 rock
string
scissors
ruler
Procedure: (What to do, the steps in third person)

Begin by taking out the 8 objects from the science kit that you will be finding
density for, along with the necessary materials to aide in the lab. Refer to the
materials listed above.
Create a chart for the 8 objects you will be calculating density for to keep track of
your data with the following columns; mass (g), volume, and density (g/ML).
Individually weigh each of the objects to find the mass in grams. Remember to
record your data on the chart.
Fill the 100mL graduated cylinder up with water up to the 60mL line.
Calculate the volume of the hooks, washers, cylinder, and rock by tying a string
around the objects and individually dropping them into the graduated cylinder
using the water displacement method. Align your eyes with the new water level
after submerging each object and subtract the new water level in mL from the
beginning 60mL to find the volume of the object. Example: If after submerging 8
washers tied together into the graduated cylinder the water level rises to 63mL
you subtract 60mL from that to find the volume. Therefore, the volume of the 8

washers would be 3mL. For objects that dont fit into the graduated cylinder, such
as the square block, calculate volume using the following formula:
Volume cm^3 = (length x width x height). Record data onto chart.
After having found the mass and volume of each of the 8 objects, calculate
density by using the following formula: Density(g/mL) = Mass (g)/Volume (mL)
Round all numbers to the nearest thousandth (3 moves from the right of the
decimal) and record all data onto chart.
Create a graph with all the varying density of the 8 objects. Y-axis would be
density in g/mL and x-axis being the object.

Conclusion:
Write three questions and provide the answer that someone should be able to answer after
completing this lab.

How do you calculate the volume of an object utilizing the water displacement
method?
You calculate the volume of an object utilizing the water displacement method by
subtracting the new water level from the original water level. The difference between
the two is the volume of the object in milliliters.
How do you calculate the density of an object?
You can calculate density of an object by dividing its mass from its volume.
Which object had the least amount of density and which object had the highest
amount of density?
The object that had the least amount of density was the square block and the object
that had the highest amount of density was the 4 washers that were tied together.
