Erlandsons received a gift that has kept on giving

Heart transplant led to lasting friendship

BY C. A. RAY
Grant County Herald

Janice Erlandson has

a unique connection to a
family from the Ortonville area. You might say
a connection of the heart.
When Janices husband
Merle needed a heart
transplant in 1997, he
received the heart of a 43
year old Ortonville man.
Following the transplant,
Merle lived another 10
years and both families
got to know each other
and share each others
lives.
Merle Erlandson
farmed the family farm
on the Grant/ Otter Tail
County border, just east
of Highway #1, since his
father died of a heart attack when Merle was only
15 years old.
The farm is now in
its fourth generation,
said Janice, as her son Allen currently lives there.
In 1980, when Merle
was only 47 years old, he
suffered a heart attack
that resulted in a triple
bypass. Heart problems
run in the family.
Merles father, all
six of his brothers, and
his sister died of heart
problems before they
turned 60, said Janice.
Merle had to give up
farming, but the bypass
kept him going for ten
years until his heart
stopped in 1990. He had
a defibrillator installed
that shocked his heart
into starting if it stopped
again.
That kept him going
for another two years
when doctors detected
more blockage.
His heart was in
such bad shape there was
nothing doctors could
do, recalled Janice. They
basically sent him home
to die.
However, transplant
specialists at Abbott
Northwestern in Minneapolis, where Merle had
to go for an angioplasty,
felt Merle was a good
candidate for the heart
transplant - he was fairly
young, in good shape
otherwise, but mostly
they said he had the
right positive attitude
and the mental toughness required for a heart
transplant.
Merle always was
easy going and, even
through his heart attacks,
had such a good attitude.
In 1992, Merle Erlandson was put on the

list to receive a heart

transplant.
It was a long wait. At
one point, Merle told his
doctor that he didnt think
he was going to last long
enough and they could
take his name off the list
and put someone else on
it. The couple moved to
Fergus Falls to be near the
hospital that had become
a second home.
But then on June 7,
1997, at 2:00 a.m. the Erlandsons received a phone
call from Abbott. They
informed Merle that a
heart had been found and
he was to get to Abbott
in two hours. The heart
of a 43 year-old traffic
victim was in Fargo being
prepped for the journey
to Abbott as well.
The Erlandsons took
a waiting air ambulance
from Fergus Falls to St.
Paul and arrived at 4:07
a.m. Merle was immediately started on anti-rejection drugs. Blood tests
showed the heart was a
perfect match and it was
flown to Abbot. The surgery took five hours, and
Janice recalled, there were
some tense moments.
At one point his
blood pressure dropped
to 43 over 24 and it didnt
look like he was going to
make it, said Janice. In
fact, the nurses asked me
if Merle wanted to donate
any of his organs if he
passed away.
But once the heart
was installed, it started
easily and was soon ticking like a clock. Merle was
able to go home on July 2.
It was the 230th heart
transplant performed at
Abbott since the first one
in 1985.
The Erlandsons had
to return to Abbott weekly
for biopsies that would
check for signs of rejection. But the results
showed that the heart was
doing so well, he was actually able to stop taking
some of the anti-rejection
drugs he was on.
He would have to take
other anti-rejection drugs
the rest of his life.
Meanwhile, Janice
and Merles sons, Wayne
and Allen, who both
worked at Imation in Wahpeton, started talking to a
fellow worker, Gary Karels
from Ortonville. Wayne
and Allen talked about
the drama in their fathers
life, and Gary said he was

going through the death

of his brother, Frank, who
just died in a car accident.
It didnt take long before
the men put two and two
together and realized they
shared a special bond.
Merles sons asked
their dad if he wanted to
meet the family of the man
whose heart was keeping
him alive.
He was real nervous
about it at first, recalled
Janice, so we called LifeSource, the program that
puts donors and those
that need transplants together, and they said it was
alright to make contact.
So one Saturday night
while Merle was out walking, Janice answered the
phone and Pauline Karels,
Franks widow, was on the
other end.
She introduced herself and asked if she could
come and visit sometime.
When Merle returned
from his walk he talked to
Pauline for over an hour
and they agreed to have
a meeting.
Pauline and Frank
had two children, Scott,
7, and Sarah, 11, and they
said they wanted to meet
the man that got daddys
heart.
The first meeting at
Erlandsons home went
well and Merle and Janice
heard the heartbreaking
story of how Frank had
died: Frank, like Merle, was
a farmer. He lived in Ortonville, but farmed land
ten miles out of town. On
Memorial Day weekend,
1997, he had put in some
long hours and was very
tired on the drive home.
He missed a curve he
had taken literally hundreds of times, crashed,
and suffered severe head
trauma. Frank was flown
to Fargo where he remained in a coma for six
days. Doctors told Franks
family that he was brain
dead and asked if he had
ever mentioned becoming
an organ donor. Pauline
said the couple had talked
about it but didnt know if
Frank had ever made his
wishes known to anyone
else. Frank came from a
large German Catholic
family and while his siblings gave their consent,
his father was very much
against letting Frank go.
Franks mother had
died in a car accident at
the same age of 43.
Franks father said he
could touch Frank and he
was still warm, he could
feel his heart beating, it
just didnt seem like he
was dead, said Janice.

Janice Erlandson looks through scrapbooks she and

Merle kept of his heart transplant journey. Included are
dozens of family photos of the Karels family.

Frank Karels
But then Pauline
found an organ donor
card in Franks billfold and
suddenly it was like the
family got permission to
go ahead with the harvesting of his usable organs.
On Thanksgiving, the
Karels family invited Merle
and Janice to join them
for a big, old fashioned
Thanksgiving.
When the feasting was
done and it was time for
good-byes, Franks father
took Merle aside and admitted, I wasnt for this
at first, but you know ...
Im glad you got Franks
heart.
Merle understood the
incredible gift the Karels
family gave him. He lived
for ten additional years
and got to see and know all
eight of his grandchildren,
and he was very grateful.
As he explained to a writer
for a LifeSource publication: It (the donated
heart) is a giver of life, no

doubt about it. A German

Catholic heart went into a
Norwegian Lutheran, and
it works like a charm.
The relationship between the two families
grew. The Erlandsons
began to be invited to
Karels family gatherings:
Sarah and Scotts high
school graduations in
1997 and 2007; as well as
Garys childrens school
activities.
And the relationship
didnt stop with Merles
death from lung cancer
on October 19, 2007, eight
days before what would
have been the Erlandsons
50th wedding anniversary.
We were told from
the start that one of the
side effects of the antirejection drugs Merle was
taking can be cancer, Janice said, adding that Merle
was under hospice care
at their home for the last
three weeks of his life. His
grandchildren and children visited often, and he
passed away peacefully.
It was never in his
nature to be depressed,
said Janice. The glass
was always half-full. I
never saw him get angry
or complain. He deserved
those extra ten years.
And the relationship
between the two families
that shared a heart continues to this day. Janice

still gets Christmas cards

from all of Franks sisters, and school photos
from Garys kids.
She is looking forward to attending Scotts
wedding this August and
considers the Karels children part of her family,
which now consists of
eight grandchildren.
Her son Allen lives
on the family farm and
still works in Wahpeton,
with Gary Karels. Wayne
lives in Fergus Falls and
works for Otter Tail
Power, and daughter Sharon Nelson lives in Ashby
and is a legal secretary in
Fergus Falls.
Frank and Merle
would have been great
friends if they had known
each other, said Janice.
They were farmers, were
giving people, with a
great attitude and loving
families.
Both families encourage others to become organ donors.
There are misconceptions about some
donations, said Pauline
Karels. With the eye,
for instance, they just
take the cornea, and the
smaller organ donations,
like connective tissue,
help as many as 10,000
lives each year.
One donor, according to the Red Cross, can
help at least four or five
people.
Janice suggests talking to family members
about becoming an organ
donor and making sure
you are so designated on
your drivers license.
Put yourself in the
position of the other person, she said. What if it
is a member of your family that needs a heart. Or
consider a future need,
like a hip replacement.
The bone or connective
tissue will have to come
from somewhere.

Tips On Helping Your Yard Warm Up To Spring

(NAPSA)With winter finally
behind us, its time to focus on getting your yard prepped and ready
to enjoy! Here are some tips that
can help make your time and effort
more productive and rewarding.
Dont try to get everything
done in just one weekend. Make
sure the lawn has a chance to
wake up and come back to life
during the early spring months. If
you are patient, the sun and soil
will often do much of the prep
work for you.
Give your yard a thorough
raking before you treat the grass
or mow for the first time. Raking
pulls up any thatch that may have
accumulated over the winter and
highlights any dead spots or compacted areas that need special
attention. If your lawn is compacted, loosen the soil so the grass
can start growing again.
Its easier to rid your lawn of
weeds before they have a chance
to form. Early spring is a good
time to apply herbicides to prevent the weeds from developing.
Low spots in a lawn can cause
poor drainage, lead to poor growing conditions for grass and make
mowing a challenge. Use a shovel
to cut away areas that are raised
and fill in spaces that are
depressed.
Using the right tools for various lawn care projects can pay
dividends, particularly when it
comes to getting the job done right
the first time.
Start your spring-cleaning
tasks with a deep clean of your
deck, siding and driveway for an
instant curb appeal boost. The
Briggs & Stratton POWERflow+
pressure washer offers a highpressure option for deep cleaning
or high-flow option for longerreaching and faster-rinsing cycles.
It can also be used on delicate surfaces, such as your patio furniture.
Its 7-in-1 nozzle with onehanded operation saves time and
eliminates the need for multiple
trips. It even has a detergent

tank that works to deliver power
soaping on demand and a folddown handle design for compact
storage.
If your yard has an uneven terrain, the Troy-Bilt Mustang ZeroTu r n L a w n M o w e r i s m a d e t o
handle such tasks. It has a Kohler
engine, comes with mulching
capabilities and has an integrated
rear hitch that allows you to use
dump carts, spreaders and other
tow-behind attachments. You can
also attach a garden hose to
quickly and easily clean the
underside of a deck.
The Troy-Bilt FLEX, available
exclusively at Lowes, is a whole
new approach to yard care. It features a single-base engine that
powers four different attachments
including a wide-area mower, leaf
blower, pressure washer and snow
thrower, freeing up a lot of space
in your garage. It allows you to
easily transition from one job to
the next as each attachment clicks
right into the base engine.
The attachments are sold separately so homeowners can customize their system. This allows
customers to save money and up to
60 percent of garage storage space
when compared to the purchase of
individual, one-use products.

(NAPSA)Forget about spotting the proverbial robin. For

many, the first real sign of Spring
is getting their lawn mower and
other small-engine equipment out
of storage and ready for the season.
But before you rev up the motor,
its important to remember that
your equipment has been sitting for
months and you need to take proper
steps to get it in working order.
Proper preparation yields a
variety of benefits, including better performance, saved maintenance costs and maximizing the
life of your machine.
To help get your machines
ready for the season ahead, here
are some tips to get you started.
Clean em up. After sitting
in a storage shed for a few
months, your machines have
likely acquired a nice layer of
dust, dirt and grime. Make sure to
do a thorough cleaning of the
entire machine and check for any
damage or possible blockages.
Never a dull moment. If
you are working on your lawn
mower, hedge trimmer or any
other machine with a blade, the
Spring tune-up is an excellent
time to make sure its in prime
cutting shape. The blade should
be sharpened at least once a year.
While the blade is off, its also a
good time to finish cleaning the
underside of the machine.
Dont forget the filter. Its a
good idea to start the season with
a clean filter. If the machine has a
foam filter, you can clean it with
soap and water. However, if its a

paper filter, its best to replace it
with a new one.
A well-oiled machine.
Whether its a lawn mower, motorcycle or ATV, small-engine equipment will work better if its well
lubricated, particularly if it has
been in storage. Make sure to oil
the wheel bearings and other
moving parts.
Prepare your engine. To
make sure your engine starts up
on the first try this Spring, try a
fuel additive such as Start Your
Engines! Its a fuel revitalizer
designed for use with any small 2and 4-cycle motors that have been
sitting in storage and are ready to
reactivate. Just pour it directly
into the gas tank, and the engine
should start up fast, hassle-free.
As an added bonus, it attacks
and dissolves any gum or varnish
buildup.

Go With A Pro To Be Sprinkler Savvy

(NAPSA)With warmer weather upon us, you may be getting
ready to boot up your irrigation
system to return your landscape
to its former glory. Before you
get started, remember that winter can take a toll on your sprinkler system, causing anything
from cracked pipes to broken
sprinkler heads. This type of
damage can result in lots of
wasted water.
Americans use nearly 9 billion
gallons of water outdoors every
day, primarily for landscape irrigation. Up to half of that is
wasted due to evaporation, wind,
and runoff from overwatering. In
fact, a single broken or missing
sprinkler head can waste up to
25,000 gallons of water and more
than $90 over a six-month irrigation seasonplus, its not healthy
for your plants!
To reduce water waste (and
avoid rising utility bills) this summer, consult a certified irrigation
professional to spruce up your
sprinkler system this spring. An
irrigation professional certified by
a WaterSense-labeled program is
equipped with the necessary skills
and knowledge to get your watering system in tip-top shape. Go
with a pro to:
Audit: Test your irrigation
system to confirm that it performs
properly and efficiently.
Install, maintain and repair:
Select and service the appropriate
equipment and site layout, as well
as ensure proper scheduling of
your irrigation system to optimize
performance.
Design: Customize your irrigation system to best suit your
landscape and account for local
climate conditions.

Four Ways To Keep Your Pet Happy In Hot Weather

An irrigation professional certified

by a WaterSense-labeled program
can help inspect, connect, direct
and select your watering equipment for a sprinkler spruce-up!
Even if you dont need a full irrigation makeover, before you ramp
up your watering efforts, give your
system a little sprinkler spruce-up
with these four steps: inspect, connect, direct and select. Inspect your
sprinkler heads for cracks; look for
leaks where sprinklers connect to
hoses and pipes; direct spray onto
your landscape and away from
driveways and sidewalks; and, if
you are currently using a clock
timer to schedule watering, select a
WaterSense-labeled, weather-based
irrigation controller, which uses
local climate data to provide only
the water your plants need.
You can learn more about how
to maintain a water-smart irrigation system, find a certified irrigation professional, and search for
WaterSense-labeled irrigation controllers by visiting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys

(NAPSA)Pet parents who are

cool to four important facts can
help their furry friends flourish
during the warm weather months.
1. Heat Can Bring Frightening Sounds of Thunder. Storm
phobia can seriously affect the
quality of life for pets.
Barbara L. Sherman, Ph.D.,
DVM, suggests you reward pets
for calm behavior. Treat your pet
to a special inside toy when he
exhibits calm demeanor; hell
associate good behavior with special toys.
Also, make sure she can get to
a favorite hiding place and feel
safe when the lightning flashes
and the thunder rolls.
2. K e e p P a w s C o o l a n d
Smooth. Brandon McMillan, professional dog trainer and host of
the CBS hit show Lucky Dog,
says, When the temperature hits
85 degrees or higher, most dogs
begin feeling uncomfortable.
Depending on your pets coat, the
temperature can feel 15 to 30

walk through the grass or on a
cool surface to help her feel better. McMillan recommends placing your hand where your pet
will walk. If its too hot for you,
most likely, its too hot for your
pet, too.
You may want to move your
walks to after dark. To keep your
pet safe from traffic at night, you
can get a leash and collar from the
Petmate Max Glow in the Dark
collection. Let it soak up the sun
all day and it will glow automati-

cally when youre out with it at
night.
3. Exercise Gradually. An
animals body temperature can
rise rapidly due to his or her furry
coat and that can increase the
odds of heatstroke. McMillan
advises pet parents to bring water
with them on long walks during
the hotter months.
In addition, increase your dogs
play time gradually. Try toys such
as Petmates Chuckit! brand Ultra
Sling, a pocket-sized launcher for
a variety of fetch toys.
4. Heatstroke Signs And
Symptoms. The ASPCA advises
pet owners to watch out for:
excessive panting
staggered breathing
increased heart rate
drooling and vomiting.
These can be signs of serious
heatstroke or other illness and
should get you to contact the vet
or emergency animal hospital
immediately.

Help Kids Handle Bullying

(NAPSA)Theres good news,
bad news and better news when it
comes to children being bullied.
The good news is that the
incidence of bullying among teens
is at an all-time low.
The bad news is that one in
five kids still experiences bullying.
The better news is that there
are steps that parents, teachers
and others can take to prevent the
problem.
What To Do About Bullying
1. Spend at least 15 minutes a
day talking with your child.
Research shows this can build the
foundation for a strong relationship, boost your childrens confidence and build effective strategies
for facing bullyingwhether children are being bullied, engaging in
bullying or witnessing bullying.
2. K n o w w h a t s g o i n g o n a t
school, who their friends are and
any challenges they face. Read
class newsletters and school flyers. Check the school website, go
to school events, meet teachers
and counselors at Back to School
night. Know how to reach the parents of classmates.
3. Encourage kids to speak to a
trusted adult if they are feeling
unsafe or are bullied, or see others
being bullied. The adult can give
comfort, support and advice, even if
he or she cant solve the problem
directly. Sharing concerns and fears
with a safe and caring adult can
bring about meaningful solutions.
4. Talk about how to stand up to
kids who bully. Give tips, including
using humor and saying stop
directly and confidently. Talk about
what to do if those actions dont
work, such as walking away or
seeking help from an adult.
5. Ta l k a b o u t s t r a t e g i e s f o r
staying safe, such as staying near
adults or groups of other kids.
6. Urge kids to help others who
are bullied by showing kindness or
getting assistance from an adult.
7. Model treating others with
kindness and respect. Kids learn by
observing adults. Even if it seems
like they are not paying attention,
kids watch how adults manage
stress and conflict, as well as how
they treat their friends, colleagues
and families. By treating others
with kindness and respect, adults

Relax: The air you breathe at home can be clean and fresh, even with
all the windows closed.
(NAPSA)Picture this: Your
windows are closed, the air-conditioning is on and you and your
family are comfortable. Do you
really need to worry about indoor
air quality? According to the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency,
you do.
Tightly sealed homes designed
to conserve energy also restrict
the flow of fresh outdoor air into a
home and limit the removal of
indoor air pollutants. Things like
dust, smoke, pollen, animal dander, particulates from mold, bacteria and viruses can irritate eyes
and breathing passages. In addition, gaseous pollutants that
come from chemical processes
involved in heating or cooling,
building materials, adhesives,
paints, varnishes, furnishings
and cleaning products can also
raise the level of indoor irritants.
Thats cause for concern, especially when you consider that
many Americans spend as much
as 90 percent of their day indoors.
Fortunately, you can find a
complete line of indoor air quality
products to combat poor indoor air
quality and its effects. A HEPA
whole-house air cleaner, for example, captures up to 99.97 percent
of particles that are 0.3 microns or
larger, helping to clean the air and
reduce allergy symptoms often
triggered by airborne pollutants.

There are also a number of

supplemental products designed

indoor air quality:
W h o l e - h o u s e h u m i d i f i e r s
replenish moisture and reduce the
effects of dry air.
Whole-house dehumidifiers
eliminate excess moisture and
help prevent toxic mold growth
throughout your home.
Ultraviolet irradiation systems mount inside your air-conditioning systems indoor cooling
coil to continuously clean the coil
and drain the pan safely and economically by neutralizing mold,
bacteria, viruses and other
microorganisms.
H e a t r e c o v e r y v e n t i l a t o r s
replace stale, unhealthy air from
inside your home with a stream of
fresh air, extracting 70 to 80 percent of the heat from the stale air.
Energy recovery ventilators
perform the same functions as
heat recovery ventilators but with
the added benefit of controlling
moisture in your home.
In addition to improving indoor
air quality, many of these products from the Luxaire brand of
Johnson Controls increase the
efficiency of your air-conditioning
system as they deliver consistent,
dependable comfort.
