Part I: Choral reading and echo reading can be used to help struggling readers

develop phonological awareness, phonological analysis, phonics and fluency. Do you

agree with this statement?
I agree with the statement in reference to Choral reading and Echo reading can be
beneficial for struggling readers. Choral reading can help build motivation for
students who may feel nervous or self-conscious reading aloud and on their own.
Instead of being picked individually to read aloud where they may stumble on words
by themselves, in choral reading, they can build their fluency together as a group.
With Choral reading, students will receive practice so that theyre able to read by
themselves.
With Echo reading, students repeat text that the teacher reads. Its great for
building fluency and intonation. Students will learn to pronounce words and read
them by sight.

Part II: List and describe three ways you could scaffolding development of phonics
with words from both informal and academic language (hint: be sure to include
teaching word parts and/or cognates
1. As a teacher for an English and Language Arts classroom, students will
encounter challenging literature from different parts of the world. Some literature
may have words from different languages or they may hold a different accent and
dialect within the text. Through scaffolding and modeling new words for the
students, Choral reading would be best for them to really listen and understand the
tone of the text in which the author has written. It would help them to pronounce
certain and words and it would also help them comprehend new words through
context clues.
2. Echo reading could be really beneficial if I have a number of ESOL students in my
classroom. Using Echo reading as a scaffolding method, students are able to
become a pair or a group and read together, repeating the same portion of text
after me. This small group could help with their self-esteem in reading. Instead of
reading aloud individually, they can build confidence among their small group of
peers, together. It could help introduce new words and pronunciation.
3. While reviewing new words, students are able to increase their vocabulary. Echo
reading can also be used for the whole entire classroom or in groups. By reviewing
new words and their definition, students are able to expand their vocabulary by
repeating words and definitions after the teacher. This would be great before

reading difficult pieces of literature so that students are able to understand difficult
words as they read.
