VARIATION OF GENES
Different forms of genes are called
ALLELES
These alleles are either DOMINANT or
RECESSIVE
DOMINANT allele that overrides all
other alleles
RECESSIVE must inherit allele from
both parents to be expressed

GREGOR MENDEL (1866)

He bred different varieties of pea
plants
He bred white flowered peas with
yellow flowered peas
He collected seeds from the new
plant and grew them (FIRST
GENERATION F1), they were all
yellow
He assumed that yellow colour is a
dominant allele gene

He then bred the F1 generation with

each other to make the F2
generation
This F2 generation contained a
mixture of white and yellow flower
peas
He assumed that the white colour is
a recessive allele gene

Heterozygous
you have
different paired
alleles

Homozygous
you have the
same paired
alleles

B= Brown eyes
b = blue eyes

1) Write down what is meant

by the word allele.
2) Explain how you inherit
two alleles for each gene.
3) Explain the difference
between a dominant and a
recessive allele.
