NURS 440
Self-Assessment of Nursing Standards
ANA Standard (Look)

Standard 7: Ethics

Standard 8: Education

Brief Description (Elaborate)

This standard expects the
registered nurse to practice
ethically by meeting the
following competencies:
assists healthcare consumers
in self determination and
informed decision-making,
advocates for equitable
healthcare consumer care,
speaks up when appropriate to
question healthcare practice
when necessary for safety and
quality improvement (ANA,
2010, p 47).
The registered nurse should
participate in ongoing
educational activities related to
appropriate knowledge bases
and professional issues, seeks
experiences that reflect current
practice to maintain
knowledge, and contributes to a
work environment conducive to
the education of healthcare

Activities that Helped you

Meet the Standard (Analyze)
I have met this standard
specifically when I spoke up at
clinical recently as I had a
patient and her daughter say
that they did not feel they were
ready to leave the hospital yet
and no one was listening to
them. After speaking with my
instructor I told them that they
have the right to tell them they
did not feel safe being
discharged. The patient was
still at the hospital the next
morning, which made her feel
better.
I meet this standard as I
complete continuing education
credits to further my
knowledge and stay up to date
on my skills. Still being in
school, we spend time learning
the most recent evidence based
practice so when we enter the
field we have that knowledge
and can share with our

Plan to Meet Standard(Revise)

In the future I can meet this
standard by watching my peers
and telling them if they are
doing something unsafely,
hopefully they would do the
same for me. I will also always
give my patients the
information so they can make
informed decisions so they do
not make decisions based on
advice from other care workers.

In planning to meet this

standard in practice in the
future, I will work with my
nurse educator to follow up on
the most recent evidence based
practice, continue completing
continuing education hours,
and should I work on a
specialty unit I will educate
myself to the skills specific to
