Teaching Portfolio Rationales

Part I: Describe a teaching artifact that represents the overall HTSB Standard
HTSB Overall Standard
Standard #8: Instructional Strategies

The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional

strategies to encourage learners to develop deep
understanding of content areas and their connections, and to
build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

Teaching Artifact Description

Teaching Artifact Results

295A
The site www.cfnc.org is a place where students
can create career portfolios that can be
accessed from anywhere. Even after
graduation, students can use the information
and documents theyve gathered during the
career portfolio unit. Students can work through
a myriad of career oriented assessments,
templates, and trainings.
Students have done a great job of doing selfdirected learning in using the website to
construct their career portfolio.

Part II: Connect the teaching artifact to sub-standard and assess your
proficiency

Sub Standard

Connection to Artifact

Does Candidate help learners use a variety of

sources and tools, including technology, to
access information related to an
instructional objective? (8.7a)
Because students can always access the information they
need to complete the assignments, we are able to spend
more class time going over concepts.

Self-Assessment
4-Candidate ALWAYS does this as a teacher.
3-Candidate MOSTLY does this as a teacher
2-Candidate SOMETIMES does this as a teacher

1-Candidate RARELY/NEVER does this as a teacher

NA-Candidate did not have the opportunity to do
this

Evidence of Self-Assessment

I walk around while students are using the platform and talk
to them to see if the students are able to understand the
system and if they need any help. They are all very well
versed in use of technology.
Part III: Improve your proficiency for the HTSB Standard
Sub Standard to Improve
Does Candidate help learners use a variety of
sources and tools, including technology, to
access information related to an
instructional objective? (8.7a)
What to Improve?
More use of technology
Research at least 2 resources on how An article from Vanderbilt talks about bringing in guest
to improve proficiency.
speakers through video conferencing. I had actually not
even thought of that for my students. What a great idea here
in Hawaii where it can be harder to get experts to come to
classrooms.

Implementation of Findings

Another way to incorporate technology is to have the

students use their smartphones, even if they have to pair up.
According to data compiled by the research firm Nielsen,
58 percent of American children from 13- to 17-years-old
owned a smartphone as of July 2012an increase of more
than 60 percent over the previous year. And with over 50
percent of mobile phone users in America now using
smartphones, the numbers only seems to be growing.

I will begin to use smartphones in my lessons. One way in
which I can do this is through adding it to bell work. This is
a great way to deal with getting them into my class each
day. Exciting!
