My teaching is designed around the theory that students will truly adopt new language and techniques only if they can use them often, use them authentically and use them in a safe environment. "Soft" skill-sets like communication, management and, conflict resolution pave the way to success in the real world.

My educational philosophy is growing as I incorporate new thinking
through my coursework, fieldwork and reflection. These aspects I am
sure about: Encouraging Academic Language Use and Content Skills: My teaching is designed around the theory that students will truly adopt new language and techniques only if they can use them often, use them authentically (because they absolutely need to) and use them in a safe environment (Swain, Daggett, Krashen.) Empowering Students to be Lifelong Learners: The way that I interact as an educator is an attempt to undermine the teacher as banker paradigm and establish the desire and responsibility for learning with the students through relevant material, urgent social need, and choice. (Friere) Social and Emotional Learning: Not only do the soft skill-sets, like communication, management and, conflict resolution pave the way to success in the real world, they make the creation of complex artwork through collaboration possible in the art classroom. While it may at first prove uncomfortable for the students, my teaching is designed to produce situations that require the use of new social skills and opportunities to reflect on strategies that work.
