The General Fault Criterion is an overall impedance measuring element with a very high reach and a
long time delay for its tripping function. The GFC can be operated in two modes - the under impedance
mode and the over current mode.In the under impedance mode, the GFC characteristic should, in
general, cover all the impedance measuring zones used for distance protection, regardless of their
directionality. Normally set to 2 times of zone-3 with a limit on the resistive direction so that the
characteristics does not enter the load area.

Maximum duration of a fault for which a reclosure attempt is made.
Period (CB recovery time) from the falling edge of the last reclosure attempt during
which the autoreclosure function is blocked and after which the function is reset. In
the event of an evolving fault between discrimination and dead times, the period
commences at the instant of another trip occurring between the two times. The
reclaim timer is also started if the protection trips after the fault duration time t Oper
has elapsed.
Duration of CB close signal.
Evolving fault discrimination time for single-phase reclosure.
Evolving fault discrimination time for three-phase reclosure.
Period following the dead time during which the CB close signal has to occur. If it
does not, the Def. Trip signal is generated.
Time during which reclosure is blocked. t AR Block is started by every blocking

Instructions for Using the Setting Calculation Tool

for REL 5xx Numerical Line Protection Terminals

Always remember the following steps:

1. Open file by enabling macros. If by mistake you disabled the macros, reopen
the file by enabling macros..
2. This excel sheet is a read only file. Dont remove the restriction, so that you
will not loose the original file
3. Once the data entry is over, use Save As command for saving your file.
4. In first sheet, choose the terminal (REL 511, REL 521 & REL 531), for
which setting calculation is to be done.
5. Fill in the blue coloured cells only.
6. Remember you are not allowed to put any data, in cells other than the blue
cells.
7. In first sheet (System Details) you have to Tick in cell B17, if the terminal is
REL 531 and is used for series compensated line.
8. User has to feed only recomm_setting REL5.. sheet data into the relay.
Note: Suggestions on Improvement are Welcome. This excel sheet may contain
errors (may be zero errors). Request to report the errors to PTUA-RT.
THIS EXCEL SHEET IS INTENDED FOR INTERNAL USE OF ABB
PERSONALS.
This Setting Tool may change without prior notice. So its advised always use
latest Tool from PTUA-R database.
