History

In 1873, Cornelius Vanderbilt generously gave 1 million dollars to Holland

McTyeire for the endowment and building of the university. McTyeire
chose the location, supervised construction, and personally planted trees
around campus. In the beginning, it was only 75 acres, however over the
years it grew into today's 333 acres.

Landon C. Garland was the first to be appointed chancellor, and worked

from 1875 to 1893. He advised when facility was being selected, arranged
curriculum, and set policies. The University also had a Board of Trust
(which is still here today), who chose their own members, and acted as the
general government for the school.

In 1963 Vanderbilt was ranked in the top 20s for best private universities in
America, and still holds that ranking today by many publications.
Vanderbilt has programs in liberal arts and sciences, engineering, music,
education, human development, and a full range of graduate and
professional degrees.

Description

The University of Vanderbilt is a private, 4 year research university with over

6,000 students attending. They offer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. It is
a co-ed school located in Nashville, Tennessee, and has over 300 acres. There is
no religious affiliation, also the school is very selective when choosing applicants,
and is a medium sized school. There are ten co-ed houses students may choose
from, however they allow to live elsewhere in certain cases.

On Campus Living

Students attending Vanderbilt must live on-campus, and are only allowed to live elsewhere under certain
conditions. There are 7 residence areas, with individual houses in each, and over 30 houses available.

Students who are unhappy with their dorm and wish to change it are only able to during September 14-16.
Because of limited space, not all requests are guaranteed. If students wish to change roommates, they must
do so after 2 weeks and it will be considered upon. Likewise, if students wish to choose roommates and it is
mutual, the decision will not be guaranteed but considered. Otherwise roommates are chosen by the lottery
system.

Furniture is provided in dorms, and it is not recommended to bring extra furniture until rooms are official
and students are comfortable with their space.

ATMs are located all around the University for students to access. Although it is not required, it is
recommended students have a bank account. Vanderbilt offers help for students with creating their account.

The admissions process is need-blind for U.S. Citizens

and eligible non-citizens.
