Group Name: Team Superhero Dynamite

Members: Jocelyn Nielsen, Nicole Cooper, Kieran Claypool, Courtney Okrainec, Teresa
Lei, Liz Lobert
Lab Date: November 2, 2015
Lab Objectives: Kick, Dribble, Ball Bounce, Strike
Lab Theme: Wheelball
Equipment List: 4 scooter boards, 1 hockey net, Flames/Oilers jerseys, 2 soft balls, 8
bowling pins, 2 bouncy balls, 6 pylons, 4 hula hoops, 2 exercise balls
Partners: Keiran with Brody
Nicole with Sawyer
Courtney, Teresa, and Jocelyn with James and Callum
Liz with Derek
Safety Considerations:
Room: Benches and whiteboard should be removed to create space and minimize
distractions.
The serving machine should be removed or covered so participants will not be tempted to
play with it.
All garbage cans and the table should be removed so no one will bump into them.
All doors should be closed and equipment for our activities will be kept behind the closed
doors to keep them from distracting the students.
Games: During the Wheelball game, a ball will be passed between students by a bounce
pass. Brody will have a teacher with him to catch the ball for him and give it to him for
passing.

I will talk with the students about the importance of being careful not to hurt teammates
or the goalie with the ball. The consequence for playing roughly will be sitting out for
one minute for the first offence, five minutes for the second offence, and getting ejected
from the game for the third offence.
Medical: Brody has a condition where breathing sometimes becomes difficult. Keiran
will watch Brody to make sure he is maintaining good colour. If Brodys face starts to
look grey or blue, Keiran should ask the Educational Assistants, who accompany the
students, for help.
Warm Up: (~10 minutes) Liz Lobert with Kieran and Brody to demonstrate Bean Bag
Run/Wheel and Toss
Equipment: 25 bean bags (1 bean bag per student), 3 small hula hoops, 3 large hula
hoops
Set Up: Hula hoops will be set up in three groups as targets for a bean bag toss on the
west side of the gym. The small hula hoop will lay on the floor closest to the wall with
the large hula hoop touching it, but further from the wall. See Diagram #1
We will gather the students into a line along the East Side of the gym. Everyone will get
a partner and a bean bag. Keiran and Brody will demonstrate one partner putting the
bean bag on their head. Then the both partners will run, walk, or wheel together to the
west side of the gym. If the bean bag falls off, both partners must stop and put the bean
bag back on one of the partners heads. At the west side of the gym, Keiran will
demonstrate throwing the bean bag into the hoop from one of the coloured lines on the
gym floor. We will specify which line to stop at. I will tell the students that they get 5
points for getting the bean bag in the large hoop and 10 points for getting the bean bag in

the small hoop. Then they pick up their bean bag and return to the starting point and go
again to try to get as many team points as they can. The scoring is intended to add an
element of difficulty or competition for the older students.
Practice Skill Ball Bounce, Kick, and Strike: Skill Development Bowling (~10 minutes)
Equipment: 8 bowling pins, 2 bouncy balls
Two sets of four pins each will be set up by Keiran and by Courtney positioned under
each basketball net. Participants will be divided into two groups (Brody, Derek, and
Sawyer in one group, and James with Callum in the other group) who will line up to take
turns. The first round the participants will be asked by Keiran and Courtney to kick the
ball at the pins. Nicole will demonstrate the action for Keirans group and Teresa will
demonstrate the action for Courtneys group. For this kick Nicole and Teresa will
connect with the ball using the laces on their shoes. After resetting the pins Keiran and
Courtney will ask Nicole and Teresa to demonstrate a different kind of kick. Nicole and
Teresa will do this by putting the ball on the floor and using one foot in a sweeping,
motion approaching the ball with the side of their foot (as in soccer) to kick the ball.
Keiran and Courtney will ask the participants to try both kinds of kicks as they try to
knock down the pins to find a kick the participant feels comfortable with. Each
participant will make three attempts to knock all the pins down with the ball. Nicole and
Teresa will return the ball to the participant while Keiran and Courtney reset the pins.
For the second round Keiran and Courtney will ask their groups to bounce the ball into
the pins as demonstrated by Nicole and Teresa. Nicole and Teresa will stand about 6 feet
from the pins. They will use two hands and make sure the ball bounces once before it
hits the pins. Each participant will make three attempts to knock all the pins down with

the ball. Nicole and Teresa will return the ball to the participant while Keiran and
Courtney reset the pins.
For the third round Nicole and Teresa will demonstrate using a striking motion to knock
the pins down. They will hold the ball in front of them while standing sideways to the
pins. They will use the other hand in a sweeping motion across their body to strike the
ball (as in a sort of volleyball serve.)
After the first three rounds each participant will receive a scooter board. The scooter
boards will be part of the Wheelball game we will play as our last activity. This game is
designed to put everyone on wheels so that a wheelchair user is not at a disadvantage. To
practice using their scooter boards with a ball, the kicking, bouncing, and striking
bowling rounds will be repeated but the participants will be asked to adapt each
movement so that it works with their boards. Team members may suggest ideas to help
and assist as needed.
Modification: Brody will practice pushing/striking the ball to propel it, aiming for the
pins.
Any participants who easily knock down the pins will be asked to try again while Teresa
or Nicole try to block the ball from hitting the pins to increase the difficulty.

Practice Skill Dribbling: Obstacle Course (~10 minutes)

Equipment: 4 scooter boards, 6 pylons, 4 hula hoops, 2 bouncy balls, 2 exercise balls
The participants will remain in their groups from the bowling activity (Brody, Derek and
Sawyer; James and Callum.) Each group will set up an obstacle course on opposite sides
of our space in the gym; Brody, Derek, and Sawyer will set their course up close to the

centre of the gym while James and Callum set up by the wall. Each obstacle course will
have 3 pylons and 2 hula hoops laid out in a course designed by the participants. There
must be enough room between obstacles for a scooter board or a wheelchair to be able to
maneuver.
To begin, each group will receive a bouncy ball. Jocelyn will demonstrate dribbling the
ball (as in basketball) through the obstacle course for James and Callum, while Liz
demonstrates for Brody, Derek, and Sawyer. The participants will line up and go through
their obstacle course one at a time. For the second time through the participants will be
given a scooter board and asked to maneuver through the course while staying on their
board. Jocelyn and Liz will demonstrate sitting on the board and using both feet and
hand propulsion to move. The third time through the course participants will be asked to
push an exercise ball through the course while using their scooter board. Jocelyn and Liz
will demonstrate for each group using hands and legs to propel the board while keeping
the exercise ball under control.
Modification: For the first two times through the course, Brody will hold the ball on his
lap while he maneuvers through the course. On the third time through, Brody can push
the exercise ball with his hand or his wheelchair.
Sawyer will be encouraged to dribble as much as possible during his first time through
the course, but will be allowed to hold the ball while he runs through the course as well.
If Sawyer has trouble using the scooter board, Nicole can help by pushing him through
the obstacle course on the board.

Play the Game: (~20 minutes) Wheelball (Dribble, Strike, Ball Bounce)

Equipment: 4 scooter boards, hockey net, Flames/Oilers jerseys, 2 soft bouncy balls,
6 pylons
Set Up: Pylons will be used to mark the boundaries of the game. The hockey net will be
set up against the back wall by the doors. There is only one goal and one attacking team
because we have so few students to work with. See Diagram #2
We will have already practiced the different skills needed in the game in our previous
activities (catching was last week,) but Teresa and Courtney can demonstrate what the
goalie is supposed to do (catch, dribble, and place the ball out on the court for a save,
move out of the way for a goal, or let the ball touch them if they want to change from
being goalie.) Nicole and Jocelyn will demonstrate sitting on the scooter boards and
passing back and forth to each other, moving when the other person has the ball. Then
Nicole will demonstrate how to bounce the ball to Brody, having Keiran catch the ball
and hand it to Brody for Brody to pass it or try to score.
Rules: Liz will explain the goal of the game and the rules. The goal of the game is to
bounce or strike a ball past the goalie. Each participant will use a scooter board or
wheelchair to move around the playing area except for the goalie. Participants pass the
ball to each other by bouncing the ball. A participant cannot move with the ball; the ball
must be bounce passed to another team member or bounced/struck toward the goal.
Liz will tell the students that they are expected to be careful of their fellow students
when playing the game. Liz will explain that the consequence for unnecessary
roughness will be a 1 minute time out for the first offence, a 5 minute time out for the
second offense, and a game misconduct (sitting out the rest of the game) for a third
offense.

Goalie: The goalie will wear either the Oilers or Flames jersey (goalies choice) and
stand up while in goal. If the ball hits the goalie, the person who bounced the ball into
the goalie is the next goalie. If the ball gets in the net without hitting the goalie or the
goalie catches the ball, the goalie does not change. When the goalie catches the ball
every participant will freeze. The goalie will dribble the ball away from the goal and
leave it on the floor somewhere on the court before running back to the goal. As soon as
the goalie puts the ball on the floor, the participants have to wheel to the ball to pick the
ball up and restart the game. We want to encourage the kids to focus on making goals
without hitting the goalie. Also, because the game has just one goal, these rules allow
for the goalie to rotate in and out of the goal. A goalie who wants to stay in goal can do
so as long as he or she wants to by staying out of the balls path or by catching the ball,
and a goalie who doesnt want to be in goal can stick an arm or leg in front of the ball to
pass the job on to someone else. As teachers we can keep track of how long someone is
spending in goal and whether or not it looks like they want to change, as well.
Adaptations/Modifications: If we decide the game needs to be modified to make it
more or less challenging for the participants we can add a second goal with goalie and
divide the students into two teams. In this situation goalies will remain in goal for five
minutes at a time and then switch with someone else on their team.
We could also add an element where the participants can push the ball with their scooter
board or wheel chair to move it around but then they must pass (not try to score) after
they have done this.

Cool Down: (~10 minutes) Nicole - Balloon Chase

Equipment: 30 balloons
I will provide 30 balloons that our team will blow up (hopefully with help from our
classmates) before class starts. We will hide them in a garbage bag outside of the gym
until cool down time so no students will be distracted by them.
As a group we will gather all of the students into the middle of the gym. Nicole will
introduce the game by telling the students that they are all playing on a team against the
teachers. In this game the point is to kick or strike a balloon at a teacher to make them
freeze. A teacher can only be unfrozen if tagged by another teacher. Nicole will tell the
students that the game starts when she yells GO! We will instruct all the teachers to
move to the edges of the gym to start, then we will bring in the balloons and hand them
out. Nicole will yell go and chaos will ensue. If the game slows down we will switch so
that the teachers are it.
Modification: A teacher pushing a wheelchair user cannot be frozen. This should be
mentioned in the rules.
Additional Activity: Free Play (~15 minutes)
Equipment: Scooter boards, pylons, hula hoops, exercise ball, bowling pins, soft ball,
bouncy ball
The participants are invited to choose between a bowling game using a soft ball, an
obstacle course, and dribbling/shooting a bouncy ball at the basketball net. Each game
will be set up by the participants who wish to participate in that game in different places
within our area of the gym. Anyone bowling will be by the doors, the basketball players
will use the lower hoop, and the obstacle course can be set up near the centre of the gym.

Bowling: Pins will be set up by a team member. Participants will line up to take turns
rolling the ball at the pins. Each participant makes three attempts to knock all the pins
down with the ball. At the end of each participants turn the participant will help the team
member set the pins up for the next person.
Obstacle Course: The pylons and hula hoops will be arranged randomly with the help of
the participants. Participants will line up to take turns going through the course.
Participants must sit on their scooter board or wheel chair and push an exercise ball
through the obstacle course using their scooter board or wheelchair to push the ball.
Basketball: Participants will practice dribbling using a bouncy ball instead of a basketball
to cut down on safety risks to the other participants in the area. The ball can also be used
to shoot at the basket. Each participant will use their own ball.
Modification: Bowling: Either a teacher or a participant might choose to be a goalie,
trying to block the ball from hitting the pins.
Basketball: Brody can choose to practice pushing a small ball off his lap or an exercise
ball with his wheelchair towards another participant or to a team member.
