Monday:
o Advisory:IworkedwithastudentgettingcaughtupinEnglish.Hecameto
SaturdaySchoolovertheweekend,sohewasallcaughtupinhisother
subjects.HeworkedreallyhardtodayforitbeingaMondaymorning.
o ELA:TodaythestudentsstartedworkingontheirCharacterSketchAnalysis
ofElie.WewentthroughsomequotesfromNightthattheycoulduseas
textualevidenceintheiranalysis.Iallowedthemtousetheirnotesfromlast
weekthatwetookaboutEliesdescription,actions,feelings,andtraits.They
usedanoutlinetowritetheiranalysis(includingaclaim,aquote,andan
explanation).Mostofthestudentsfinishedwritingtheiranalysisoutandsome
startedtypingthem.
o Socialskills:Todayinsocialskills,thestudentsgottogetonthe
ChromebooksandvisittheMyHerowebsitetoreadstoriesaboutreallife
heroesaroundtheworld.Theyweretopick1storyandwriteaboutitusinga
worksheetIprintedoff.Thentheygottosharetheirstorywiththeclass.
o WehadastudentcomeinduringtheirEnglishclasstotakeabreak.They
endedupdestroyingtheroom(dumpingsanitizerdownthedrainthen
throwingthebottleacrosstheroom,rippingpaperandthrowinginonthe
ground,takingthingsoffthewalls,etc.).Then,shelockedherselfinthestaff
bathroomrightoutsideourclassroomandclaimedthatshedranktheperfume
thatwasinthere.Wecalledthenurse(whocalledpoisoncontrol),theSRO
(whocamemoreforprotection),andherfathertomakehimawareofthe
situationandgivehimtheoptiontocomepickherup.Afteraboutanhour,the
studentwascalmeddownanddecidedtogobacktoclass.Shecameback
about10minuteslateraskingtocallherfather.Shecalledhimandlethim
knowshethrewup,butsherefusedtogotothenurseagain.Inthefuture,I
woulddiscussthesebehaviorswiththestudentandtrytofindoutthe
reasoningfortheirbehavior.
Tuesday:
o Advisory:IworkedwithastudenttogetcaughtupinEnglish.Heisnot
takingadvantageofworktimeinclass,sowehadadiscussionaboutthe
expectationswhileinclass.
o ELA:Today,westartedoutwithfluencyreadingpartners.Then,Igavethe
studentssometimeonthelaptopstofinishtypingtheCharacterAnalysisthey
wroteyesterday.Wewentthrough3newvocabularywords,includingfast,
emaciated,andimpulsefromNight.Duringthesecondhalfoftheblock,we
continuedtoreadNight.
o Socialskills:Ionlyhadone7thgradestudenttoday,soIgavehimaworkday.
The8thgradersstartedtheirHeroicVisionQuest,sotheycompletedthe
worksheetsfortheirvisionandtheirintent.
o Therewasasubstituteformymentorteacherstartingat11:00todaybecause
herdaughtergotsick.Therewerenoissueswiththestudentsorthesub!

Wednesday:
o Therewasa2hourlatestarttodayforstudentsandprofessionaldevelopment
forteachers.Theprofessionaldevelopmentfocusedonmentalmodeling,
purposestatements,formativeassessment,andeffectivequestioning.These
arepartoftheBig6areastheteachersworkonthroughouttheyear.
o ELA:Westartedtheblockwithfluencypartners,thengotrightintoreading
Night.WeneedtohavethewholebookfinishedbyTuesdayorWednesday
nextweek,sothenextfewdaysaregoingtobededicatedtoreadinganddiary
entries.
o Socialskills:The7thgradestudentsstartedtheirHeroicVisionQuest,sothey
completedtheworksheetsfortheirvisionandtheirintent.Icontinuedwiththe
HeroicVisionQuestforthe8thgradestudents,sotheycompletedtheactions
worksheet.
Thursday:
o Advisory:IhelpedastudentworkonacomicstripforEasternCivilization.
Hedoesntliketodrawpictures,sothiswasdifficulttogethimstarted.
o ELA:Westartedouttheblockwithfluencypartners.Then,thestudentswrote
adiaryentryaboutsuffering.WecontinuedtoreadNightduringthesecond
halfoftheblock.
o Socialskills:ThestudentsfinishedtheirVisionQuestPackets.Theywereable
tolookuporganizationsthatsupporttheirvisionalready.
o Anewstudentstartedwithustoday,soIgottoseetheprocessofintroducing
anewstudenttotheclassroom.Wegavehimatouroftheschooland
introducedhimtoimportantpeople,liketheprincipals,counselors,librarian,
andnutritionists.Mymentorteacheralsogavehimaninterestsurveysothat
wecouldgettoknowhimbetter.Ifoundthatthisworksreallywellinorderto
gettoknowthebasicofyourstudents.Inthefuture,Iwouldliketodothis
duringthefirstweekofschooltolearnaboutwhatmystudentsareinterested
in,aswellaswhatmotivatesthem.Hewasnonverbalthewholeday,although
wedidgethimtonodorshakehisheadinresponsetoouryes/noquestions.
Friday:
o Advisory:TodayIhelpedastudentwithmathandenglish.Yesterday
afternoonIsentworkhomewithhimthathewasbehindinandtoldhimthat
ifhedidntgetitdonethathewouldhavealunchdetentiontodaybecauseit
wasworkthatneededtobefinishedtoday.Hecametoschooltodaywithout
havingitdone,sowestarteditinadvisoryandhewasaworkinglunchagain
today.
o ELA:Westartedouttheblockwithfluencypartners.Then,thestudentsgot
sometimetorevisetheirCharacterAnalysisSketch.Westartedoutthe
secondhalfoftheblockwithaquickvocabularyquiz(fast,emaciated,
impulse,andliberated),thenusedtherestofthetimetoreadNight.
o Socialskills:Todayinsocialskills,mymentorteacherandIcheckedthe
studentsgradesandmissingassignments,thenthestudentsgotaworkdayto
getcaughtupinhomework.
o AfterthefirstblockofELA,Icamebackintomymentorteachersclassroom
anditwasalltornup.Isawthattheclassroomdooroftheconnectingroom
wasclosed,soIpeakedinandsawthebreakroomdoorwasbeingheldbythe
deanofstudentsandmymentorteacher,alongwith2associateswhowerein
there.Ournewstudenthadameltdownandhadaphysicalaltercationwiththe

principal,sohewasescortedtothebreakroomtocalmdown.Thethingthat
sethimoffwasaPokmonbookwefoundinhisbagthismorningand
broughtintotheclassroom.Apparently,hedidntwantitintheclassroom
anymorebecausehegotup,lefttheclassroom,wenttohislockertoputit
away,butcouldntgethislockeropen,whichsethimoffevenmore.Hespent
aboutahalfhourinthebreakroomwiththedoorbeingclosed.Hewasableto
comeoutofthebreakroomandcolortocalmdownmore,thenworkedthe
restoftheafternoon.
o WehadanIEPmeetingforoneofourstudents.
2. Whatwereyourmostsatisfyingexperiences?Whatwereyourmostchallenging
experiences?
Oneofthemostsatisfyingexperiencesthisweekwastakingchargewhentherewasa
substitute.ItgavemeagreatoutlookonrunningmyownclassroombecauseIcould
tellherwhatthestudentsshouldandshouldntbedoingwhileinthisclassroom.It
alsogotmeexcitedforhavingmyownclassroomsoon!
Oneofthemostsatisfyingexperiencesthisweekwasturninginanassignmentforthe
studentIvebeenworkingwithinadvisoryandtheteachertellingmethatthestudent
hasbeenhavingagreatstreakrecentlyandtheycreditedittomydedicationtohim
ThismademefeelverygoodaboutthestrategiesIwasusingandthedemandsIput
onthestudentwhilestudentteachingsofar.
Oneofthemostchallengingexperienceswaswhentheparentsofastudentdecidedto
revokeallIEPservicesfortheirdaughter.Theschoolnotedthattheythinkthiswas
anextremelynegativedecision,buttheparentsdontwanttheirdaughtertoreceive
anymoreservices.Theschoolhasbeenhavingatoughtimewiththisparticular
studentandnoticedthatherbehaviorswerestartingtoescalaterecently.Theywere
planningonchangingherIEPtofitherneedsbettersincethemajorchangeinher
behaviors.Ilearnedfromthismeetingthatsometimesbigdecisionswillbe
completelyoutofmycontrol.
3. Whataretheplansfortheupcomingweek?
SinceIamfadingoutnextweek,IhavedecidedtoshowthemoviePayItForward
duringSocialSkills.ThestudentshavejustfinishedupworkingontheirHeroic
VisionQuest,somymentorteacherandIthoughtthiswouldbeagreatwaytoend
theunitandsendthemintoSpringBreak.ThereisnoSocialSkillsclasson
Wednesdayduetoearlyout/conferencesandnoschoolFriday,sotheyonlyhave3
daysnextweek.
InELA,wearegoingtocontinuetoreadNightandtrytofinishitupbyTuesdayor
WednesdaybecausemycooperatingteacherwillbegoneThursdayandwewantto
showthestudentsElieandOprahtouringAuschwitzvideoonThursday.
