Avatars & Video

games

1-Avatars in video games are the player's representation in the game world.
2-The first video game to include a representation of the player was Maze War in 1973,
which was the first first person shooter. This game represented the players as an eyeball.
Many games offer a basic character model, or template, and then players customize the
physical features. In Nintendo's Wii console avatars take the form of stylized, cartoonish
people. On November 19, 2008, Microsoft released an Xbox 360 Dashboard update where
users can personalize the look of their Avatars by choosing from a range of clothing and
facial features.
3-The Avatar: The Last Airbender video game allows the player to control one of four
characters Aang, Katara, Haru, or Sokka in a single-player adventure. Each character
uses his or her own trademark weapon and fighting style, and is able to earn new special
abilities through experience and defeat enemies. A variety of items can help the player with
quests, or during battle (enchanted accessories, and healing potions).
4-The Avatar Marketplace allows users to purchase additional product and game branded
clothing, PlayStation Home for Sony's PlayStation 3 console also features the use of
avatars, but with a more realistic style than Nintendo's Miis or Microsoft's Avatars.
5-Why do we choose the avatars that we do? How do different avatars change our behavior
in games? We decide to look like an elf because elves get +5 Intelligence but there are other
reasons. Studies have shown that, in general, people create idealized avatars based on
their actual selves, says Nick Yee, for example overweight people create thinner avatars.
Players who created a Mii that was their ideal body shape generally felt more connected to
that avatar and they played better: appearance influences mood.
