Stage 1:
This is a line drawing
of my phone and the
first digital sketch I
did. I used vector
tools in fireworks to
create this image.
Stage 2:
I annotated the line drawing
showing all the assets of my
phone and where they are
situated. This will be used in
my user guide.
Stage 3:
I coloured the phone in the
appropriate colours so it looks
more realistic, however I still
need to add light and shade to
it.
Cont.
Stage 4:
I now have added effects
including shading, highlighting,
distortion and skewing. This
gives the phone a 3D effect with
dimension instead of a flat 2D
drawing.
Stage 5:
I have given my phone a
screensaver which will be
the display screen for both
the internet advertisement
and the magazine
advertisement.

Justifications
I chose to design this phone in a certain way so it is not gender-specific but
can be personalised by the owner, whether male or female.
For example, the coloured section around the screen has a default colour of
aqua, as it is not considered a `girls` colour or a `boys` colour, but is more
appealing than black, white or grey. When it is being set up, the colour of the
screen surround can fade between colours, or the operator can manually
select a colour to use.
This phone has a large screen to optimize the visuals for the ease and
satisfaction of the owner. It has the latest pixel technology, which means
there are more pixels per centimetre than ever before, so the image will be
much sharper and clearer than before. The resolution is 450 x 1000 pixels.
I chose this design because it is simple but effective, as it includes a home
and back button which break up the colour, but the rest of the operations
can be accessed through the touch screen. The front camera and
microphone is hidden among the speakers which have high quality sound
outputs and can connect through Bluetooth to other phone accessories,
including wireless `invisible` gel earphones.
The phone is classified as a smartphone so can access the internet and social
networks. As it is not an Apple design, it has an Android operating system,
which means the phone is partnered, and works with Google.
I chose to give the phone rounded edges because it enhances the
appearance, and is easier and more comfortable to hold than sharp, rightangled edges would be.
Purpose
The purpose of the graphic is to act as a advert and increase sales for my
newly released mobile phone, which is targeted at teenagers aged 14-19
years old. The images I used were chosen to appeal to the target
audience and the common interests of people this age. In this case it is
punk/rock bands that are popular to this group of people.
The phone has certain features that I feel would be appropriate for the
target audience as they are already in use and are favoured among teens.
For example:
~A large touch screen (ease of use and speed)
~Dual cameras (front and back)
~ Voice activation microphones (for ease of use)
~Powerful speakers (most teens want well-amplified music)
~Reinforced case (if dropped it will not shatter)
To make the graphic product suitable for the target audience, I have
chosen themes, colours, and subjects that are generally popular with

Primary Assets
Step 1:
Find a suitably sized
background and colour. Mine
is 1000 x 700 and the colour is
black. I chose this colour
because again, it is not
gender specific and colours
placed on it will appear
brighter and stand out more
against the darkness of the
black. Also, this is a popular
colour for teenagers.
Step 2:
As I have created my moodboard previously, I had a
rough idea of what I wanted,
so I experimented with
different band logos to see
which ones looked the best
and are well-known by my
target audience.
Step 3:
I have added a filter to my
background by changing the
hue, saturation and
lightness of the images I will
used. I did this so that my
phone, when added, will be
the main focus of the
image, but the bitmap
images in the background
will still be visible.

Step 4:
Next I imported my saved
phone onto the
background for my
advert. This is the main
focus of the advert so will
be the brightest, and
most central object.
Step 5:
I created a name and added this,
and the slogan to the advert. I also
made some adjustments to the
original advert. For example, I
added a glow to my phone to make
it seem brighter than its
surroundings, and re-imported the
surrounding images, without
editing them as much, to create
the effect that the phone is lighting
up the edges of the images.
Step 6:
Finally, I placed my
completed advert onto a
website that is aimed at
teenagers. I did this because
the product has a similar
target audience to this
website, so adverts like this
would be featured in it.
I have created and designed this advert in a way which is suitable for its audience
and purpose: 14-19 year olds and to advertise and promote my phone.
My advert is in landscape form, so it will fit as a side-advert on websites, and if it
were to be played on a television, it will fit and be in proportion, as they also are
landscape, so they have a greater width than height. This would also be suitable
for a magazine, as although it may not be suitable to fit a whole page, it can be
altered and re-sized to fit an advert for half a page or less, but it will not be
distorted or look unprofessional. I have chosen to advertise my phone on this
specific website because I think it is a popular website, but it is not commonly
used for things like this, or clichd.
I have included text, and used multiple bitmap and vector graphics in both my
designs; the phone and the advert. For my fonts I used sans-serif as I felt it
matched the theme of the phone. On the first text I used texture, as this made it
different from usual, and I thought it stood out as a unique design. On the second
text I used a bright colour, which was eye-catching as it stood out against the dark
background. I chose to position the text underneath the graphic as I felt it
presented it well, and the graphic was seen first, rather than the name of the
porduct, as this might give my target audience preconceptions about it.
I manually edited all the secondary assests around my mobile phone to appear as
if the edges of the band logos were lit up my phone graphic.
This asset meets the requirements as it was created to appeal to 14-19 year olds,
and I feel the website choice and placement achieves this. Also, the font is legible,
and the graphic contains and image of the smartphone in use, and it is comressed
appropriately for viewing on a screen.

Improvements
Action
In order to better
advertise and
possibly increase
the sales of your
product, the advert
could use more
information
(possibly in text
form) to highlight
the features that
would appeal to
music lovers.
Improved Graphic
In this graphic I
have improved my
advertisement by
taking on board the
comments and
suggestions given,
and adding an
`additional features`
box. I have chosen
to use this font
because it looks
quite like a `gamer`
font, which will
appeal to those in
my target audience
who are a fan of
technology. I have
chosen these
colours because
they are the colours
of the logos
mentioned, and
stand out against
the dark
background.
Also, I could position the lightening bolt in a different place, so the name of my
phone and the slogan is easier to read, as it is not being covered up.
Finally, I could make the outer band logos fade into the blackness of the
background, to highlight the phone further, and give a greater effect to the
advert.
User Guide
Weaknesses
I think that, although the simplicity of the graphic makes it clear,
only using black and white as colouring may not appeal to my
target audience. I think this is because they would prefer colours,
possibly colour-coding for the features of the phone.
I feel that the user-guide may be too simple, and it should be a
reversible, double-sided manual, with additional information on
the back for those who know more about technology and want to
make further modifications and changes to their phone, as this
will also make it more personalized.
Also, there is quite a lot of blank space which I think could be
filled, possibly with images of the phone in use, and iuts
modifications, and what it looks like when in use.
Evaluation
I have created two graphics which have been used alongside each other, one to
advertise and promote the other. I have also created a user guide which explains how
to use one of my graphic products. To do this, I used Adobe Fireworks for the 5 stages
of my first graphic - a phone, suitable for the chosen target audience of 14-19 year
olds. First I sketched a line drawing, then annotated its assets. Then I added effects,
depth, and perspective to it, as well as colouring it and distorting it. Finally, I make the
finishing adjustments which included a home screen, and skewing.
Then I created my second graphic, an advert background for the first. I also used
Fireworks to create it. I chose my colouring and images so they are suitable for the
target audience and edited the graphic before placing my phone onto it, so it becomes
an advert.
Next, I designed a user guide, using the annotated line drawing created in the previous
task, which explains how to set up the phone I have created.
I think my phone graphic is successful because it meets all requirements, however, my
advert background could be improved to look more professional.
If I did it again I would change the background of the and the user guide so it goes into
more detail of what to do. This would help my target audience have a greater
understanding of my product and how it works.
