Individually, the kindergarten students will be able to
state one fact that they learned from each visiting
community helper with 100% accuracy.

Formative Assessment
At the end of the lesson, each student will draw a
picture of his or her favorite visiting community helper.
The student will tell the class one thing they learned
from that community helper and why they are his or
her favorite.
Summative Assessment
At the end of the unit, the students will complete a
project showcasing how they will help their community
in the future. They will incorporate information from
this lesson by choosing one of the community helpers
that visited today and a fact they learned to
incorporate into their project

To transition students into groups, students will be called
by their community helper group names. These names
will correlate with the helper from the bulletin board that
their group receives.

Evaluation of

Pre-Assessment of Students
Pre-assessment will occur during the anticipatory set in
which the teacher and students discuss the different
jobs of community helpers who are visiting
Modeling of the Concept
There is no activity that will need modeling during this
lesson. However, the teacher is responsible for giving
the students explicit instructions about how they will be
rotating through the various community helper stations.
The students will be broken into as many groups as
there are visiting community helpers.
Guiding the Practice
In small groups, students will rotate through a series of
presentations from visiting community helpers. The
visitors will bring equipment and tools to show the
children so that the students may fully experience what
each helper does. Community helpers will include those
listed in the local resource list such as the mayor, local
fire department, and township police. Other community
helpers will be invited, including a doctor, chef, and
construction worker.
Providing the Independent Practice
After students have met all of the community helpers,
they will return to the classroom as a large group. The
students will thank the visiting community helpers.
Afterwards, the students will each choose their favorite
community helper of the day. They will complete a
worksheet where they draw their favorite community
helper that visited today. Then, the students will fill in a
brief writing prompt: My favorite community helper was
________ because ________________. If time allows, the
students will share with the class. This component may
extend into the following day.
Transition
As students transition between groups they will carry
their community helper from the bulletin board.
Students will be moving between rooms and may be
going outdoors. The teacher will escort them in a single
file line.

At the end of the unit, students will be formally

evaluated through their final project, which has them
think about how they could be a community helper in
the future.
Informal Evaluation
Students will be informally evaluated at the end of this
lesson when they submit an image and explanation of
their favorite community helper from the day. They will
complete a worksheet on which they draw an image and
fill in a prompt.
Summary & Review of the Learning
At the conclusion of the group rotations, the groups will
come together in the classroom. The students will be
asked to state different things they learn

Ask a parent or family member how they are a
community helper!
