BeforeClassPreparation
1.Equipment
Theteacherwillneedtomakesurethateachstudenthasaccesstoeitheracomputerordevicein
a1:1ratioasmuchoftheinitialworkistobedoneindividually.Thismayrequiresigningout
thecomputerlabortechnologycartinatimelymannerfollowingtheschoolssignoutpolicy.
Theteacherwillalsoneedtomakesurethatallofthedevices/computersarealreadybootedup
withanopenbrowserwindowreadytogoinordertosavetime.Theteacherwillalsoneedto
makesurethatallofthedevices/computersarefullychargedinorderforstudentstohave
adequatepowerduringclasstime.

2.Handouts
Theteacherwillgiveeachstudentacopyoftherubricsothattheyknowthegoaland
expectationsoftheassignment.Therubricwillalsoguideandencouragetheirworkandeffortin
creatingthedigitalstory.Lastly,therubricwillsupplementtheteachersverbalinstructions.

Theteacherwillneedtomakesurethattheapplicablewebsitesneededfortheassignmentare
workingforthedayeachdaybeforestudentsarrivetoclass.Theteacherwillalsoneedtomake

Theteacherwillneedtomakesurethathis/herowncomputerisrunningandreadytogo,
projectingontothewhiteboardorshowingupontheSmartBoardinpreparationfor

Theteacherwillneedtohavepreparedanexampleofacompletedprojecttoshowwhile
introducingtheassignmentinordertogivethestudentsaclearerideaofwhattheywillcreate
andwhatisexpected.Theteacherwillinstructthestudentsthatthescientistintheexampleis
offlimitsforthestudentstochoosefortheirprojects.Inordertofacilitatethestudentslearning
andinquiry,theteachershouldchooseawellknownscientistthatthestudentsarealready
familiarwithfortheexamplepresentation.Suchastrategywillencouragestudentstochoosea

Jingisascreencastingsoftwareusedfortakingscreenshotpictures/videosof
auserscomputerscreenwithvoicerecordingcapabilities.Jingautomatically
uploadsthevideostoadestinationontheInternetorasasavedmoviefileonthe
computer.Jingpresentationscanbeamaximumof5minuteslong.
Screencastomatic:
Screencastomaticisascreencastingsoftwareusedfor
recordingvideoswithaudiocommentary.Videosareuploadedtothe
ScreencastomaticwebsiteandusersreceiveaURLtosharewithpotential
viewersforwatchingtheirvideos.Screencastomaticvideoscanbeamaximum
of15minuteslonghowever,incaseswheretheyneedtobelongerthereare

Theteacherwillwritedownthescientisteachstudenthaspickedtomakesurenotwostudents
choosethesamescientist.Onceastudenthasconfirmedtheirchoicewiththeteacher,theywill
beallowedtostartresearchingaftertheassignmentpreview.

(10Minutes)Theteacherpreviewstheassignmentfortheclassshowinganexamplestoryhe/she
hasalreadycreated.Theteacherwillgivestudentsallacopyoftherubricthatwillbeusedto
gradetheirdigitalstories.Therubricswillguidestudentsonwhatinformationtheyneedto
includeintheirdigitalstories.Theteacherwillansweranyquestionsthestudentsmighthave
abouttheassignment.

(30Minutes)Studentsuseclasstimetoresearchthescientisttheyhavechosen.Theywill
compiletheirresearchinaGoogleDocbytypingnotesandpastingimages.Withthismaterial,
theywilldraftthestoryabouttheirscientistbyfillingintheStoryboardTemplate(see
SupplementalLessonMaterialsattheendofthelessonplan),whichwillbeavailableasa
GoogleDoc.Thestoryboardwillallowstudentstobreakdownthestorycreatingprocessand
plantheirindividualslidesfortheirpresentationbeforetheybeginusingthepresentation
software.ThecompletedStoryboardTemplatewillbereferredtoasdraftsthroughoutthe
remainderoftheproject.

(5Minutes)Theteacherwillwrapuptheclassperiodwithpreviewingwhatthenextdaywill
looklike.Theteacherwillexplainthatstudentswillbegivingconstructivefeedbackontheir
classmatesdrafts.Thenthethirdday,studentswillbecreatingtheirdigitalstoriesinamedia
formatoftheirchoice.

Day2:
(5Minutes)Atthebeginningofclass,thestudentswillreceiveaGoogleDocchecklisttouseto
peerreviewtheirgroupmembersdrafts.Thestudentswillworkinassignedgroupsof5.
StudentswillsharetheirGoogleDocswiththeirgroupmembers.Studentswillbeinstructedto
reviewfourdifferentdraftsinordertohelpeachoftheirgroupmembers.

(50Minutes)Studentswillreadandrevieweachgroupmembersdraftsoftheirdigitalstories.
Theywillcompleteagroupchecklistastheyreadthedrafts.Thechecklistwillserveasanaidto
ensurethateachstudenthasincludedalloftherequiredelementsforthedigitalstory.Students
willnoteonthechecklistwhichpartsaremissing/includedfortheirgroupmemberstoreference
later.Thechecklistwillhavethesameexpectationsastherubric.Therewillbeonepeerreview
checklistperpersonintheformofaGoogleDoc.Afterreviewingastory,individualgroup

memberswillopenthecorrespondingGoogleDocPeerReviewChecklistforthestorysauthor
inordertoaddquestionsandcommentsorganizedallinoneplace.

Day3and4:
(55Minutes)Studentswillbeginworkingindividuallyoncreatingtheirdigitalstory
presentations.TheywillusetheirGoogleDocdraft,groupchecklist,andrubrichandouttoaid
themincreatingtheirdigitalstory.Studentswillchooseapresentationprogramtool
(Powerpoint,PreziorGoogleSlides)tocreatetheirdigitalstory.Thedigitalstorymusthavea
minimumof10slides.Theslidesmustinclude:

indepthexplanationaboutthescientistandmaterialoneachslide.Studentswillreceivetwo
daysforinclassworktocompletetheirdigitalstory.

Day5and6:

willbehandedouttostudentsatthebeginningoftheassignment.Also,Teacherwillusethis
rubrictogradestudentsduringdigitalstorypresentations.

AccommodationsandExtensions
Studentchoiceinwhichsoftwaretouseisalreadyaccountedforwithinthelesson,butif
studentsaremorefamiliar/feelmorecomfortablewithadifferentpresentationsoftwareor
screencastingprogramtheyareallowedtousethoseprogramsinstead.Beforebeginningtheir
work,though,theyneedtoconsultwiththeteachertomakesuretheirchoiceofprogramaligns
withthelessonobjectives/standardsandiscompatiblewiththeequipmentusedintheschool.
Studentswhoneedhelpnavigatingthetechnologycanworkinpairsaslongasitisclear
thattheyworkloadisequal.
Theuseofimagesinthisprojectcreatesanopportunitytodiscussdigitalcitizenshipin
termsofcopyrightandfairuse/publicdomainimages.Ifstudentsneedto,theycanfindimages
inbooksfromthelibraryandusescannerstomakeadigitalcopytoincludeintheirpresentation.

BackUpPlan
Studentscanconductresearchusingreferencematerialsfromonlinedatabasesand
referencebooksfromthelibrary.Studentscankeepwrittennotesbuttheresearchwillallbe
addedtoaGoogleDocwordprocessingsoftware.Thereasonwhystudentswillputinformation
ontoaGoogleDocissoitcanbesharedwithclassmatesandbepeerreviewed.

EVALUATION

LessonReflectionandNotes
Theindividualstudentprojectswillbepresentedfortheclassondays5and6.The
presentationswillbesharedasdigitalmovies.Eachstudenthaschosenascreencastingprogram
software(JingorScreencastomatic)andthesedigitalfileshavebeendownloadedandcanbe
sharedwiththeteacher.Theteacher,then,canpullthepresentationuponamovieplayerand
showonaprojectedscreenorSmartBoard.
Thecompletedprojectwillbeevaluatedusingbytherubricthatisattachedabove.The
teacherwillevaluatetheindividualprojectsastheyareplayedforthewholeclass.
Theteachercancreateasharedfileontheschoolnetworktoarchivepresentationsfor
lateruse.
