Learners: In the Classroom Environment

Learners engage in a variety of experiences that help them engage with their
learning.
Year 1 - Im Alive
During the Im Alive unit, learners in Year 1 discovered differences and similarities of individuals
from home and host countries. Learners also reflected upon the languages spoken in the homes of
their classmates and compared this to other countries. Similarities and differences between the
nationalities and cultural customs were discussed as whole groups within each class. Walking
around the local area, learners were invited to distinguish between things that were alive, not
alive (dead), and never alive. Scientific questions were posed during this mini-field trip to engage
and elicit responses and inquiry from learners. Learners demonstrate a willingness to try their best
and take risks while learning.

Year 2 - Seeing the Light

Students learn about light. Learners discover the importance of light and how light affects our
ability to see. Learners engage in tasks that help them to learn about the importance of light.
Learners engaged in tasks that had them explore the differences between translucent,
transparent, and opaque materials / substances. Learners engaged in lessons that also included the
marriage of literacy and IPC and learners wrote Cinquain poems about light. Students will use their
skills and knowledge to build and explore upon what they have discovered about light and apply
this to plants and photosynthesis.

Year 3 - Active Planet

Students learnt about earths physical volatility by exploring more about natural disasters such as
volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis. Our learning consisted of finding out the names of
volcanoes located around the World, labelled the features of a volcano and the sequence of an
eruption. This was incorporated into their ICT lessons where students researched more information
about the phenomenon of volcanoes as well as individual volcanoes using various websites such as
Google Earth. They also visited the Volcanic Discovery Centre in Sai Kung to learn about the
existence of a supervolcano in HK millions of year ago and heard a talk given by the Principal about
volcanoes in New Zealand. They will be making volcanoes using clay and other materials.Students
also learnt about the movement of tectonic plates during earthquakes.

Year 4 - How Humans Work

Students learn about How Humans Work. Our Learning consisted of building a clay models of the
brain, researching the major areas of the brain, and recording this research. We then mounted this

recorded information onto the clay brain models with toothpicks and then painted to major parts
of the brain as the final art portion. Children also had to consider the types of paint brushed to use
as they painted of larger areas and smaller areas. They had to carefully consider which type of
paint to use as some paints would not be the most effective on clay. Students remained engaged
and were able to recall the parts of the brain and the importance of the parts in as they worked on
tasks during the day. Students made comments like, I used my cerebellum today, in PE class,
when I had to throw the discus and balance on one leg.

Seniors: ExistingEndangeredExtinct? Physical Education

After talking through the KSUs and the learning that would be taking place in the
lesson. The PE teacher shared a circuit training model to help students set up their
own.

PE - This picture shows a year 1 classes knowledge harvest of the Olympics. Using
enquiry, they asked questions about the sports and countries that are represented at
the games. The teacher linked the games with the school's sports day indicating that
through rigorous hard work and practise of skills they will be able to demonstrate all of
the learning for their parents.
