Energy Flow Lesson Plan (Direct Instruction)

Subject/Grade: Biology

Date: Mar. 30, 2016

Standard:
S4.C3.PO4. Diagram the energy flow in an ecosystem through a food chain.
Objective, SWBAT:
Differentiate between different types of energy flow diagrams.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT:
Identify what a pyramid diagram is showing.
Describe which way the energy flows through the trophic levels.
Describe which energy flow diagram is most accurate and the which is the most used.
Evidence of Mastery:
Students will complete a worksheet that has them identify the different types of energy diagrams
and explain which is the most accurate; a score of 8/10 will show mastery.

Guided Practice

Instructional Input

Opening/Anticipatory Set:
Weve discussed what a community is, today we will be looking at how energy moves through a
community and how it is represented by different diagrams.
Teacher Will:
Use a PowerPoint presentation to
describe energy flow within a community and
how it is shown by a variety of diagrams.

Student Will:
Listen to the explanations and take notes
of the most important facts, using the
PowerNotes if they choose.

Differentiation
Students who have difficulty writing can be given the PowerNotes (guided notes) for the
students to fill in. Also students who are unable to write may use a computer to type their notes.
