Studentswillinteractwithmusicmediaasaninfluencetocreatetheirownoriginalpieceusing

Studentswillbeginwitha5minutewritingassignment.Thetopicis:Whatdoyoulookforina
themesong?Doesithavetohavethesamethemeasthemovieorbookyouarewatchingor
reading?Oncestudentshavecompletedtheirwriting,wecontinuewiththelesson.
Development:
ChangesandDiscussion(15min)
Asweareprogressingthroughthisunit,partoftheprojectwillrequirestudentstocreate
theirownthemesongthatgoesalongwiththeirmoviecreation.Thesongwillhave
similarthemesasdiscussedinthetextthatthestudentshaveread.
Priortostudentscreatingtheirownsongs,IwillplayChangesbyTupac,whichIfeel
closelyidentifieswithHermonslifeinprison.Iwillplaythesongforthestudentsand
afterwardswewillhaveadiscussion:
a. Whatdidyoulikeaboutthissong?
b. Whatwerethelyricssaying?
c. Howdoesthelanguageshapetheunderstandingofthesong?
d. Whatdidntyoulikeaboutthesong?
e. Wasitdifficulttounderstand?

Afterstudentshavelistenedtothelyricsofthesonghavehadadiscussion,wewilltalk
abouthowthelyricscanbeappliedtothetext.Toanswerthesequestions,studentswill
needtogetcreativeinntheirresponses,becausetheywillonlybeallowedtouseTwitter

toanswertheirquestionsandtheyMUSTuse(#MonsterChanges).Studentsshouldbe
abletoanswerthefollowingquestions:

3. CreativeWritingRelatingTexttoSelf(30min)
ForthisactivityIwillaskstudentstowritetheirownsongversethatmimicsthestyleof
eithertheirfavoritesongwriterORWalterDeanMyers.Theselyricsshouldbeinspired
bytheircreativemoviecharacterandwillbeusedinthecreationoftheirmovie(personal
detailstobeincluded).Inadditiontowritingthreeverses(67lineseach),students
shouldwriteaparagraphexplaininghowtheverserelatestothemandexplainhowit
relatestothewritingstyleoftheauthortheyhave.

songforMonster,Iwantyoualltoworkwithyourgroupssothatcanbegintoworkon
creatingyourOWNthemesongtoyourshortfilm.Rememberthatthissongcanbeas
creativeasyouwantjustrememberitshouldhaveatleast3verseswith67linesper
verse.Yourlyricsshouldbecreatedaroundathemethatyouareaddressinginyourshort
film,whichmeansitshouldrelateinsomewaytoMonster.Youareencouragedtouse
thestyleofoneofyourfavoritesongwritersorartists,butarealsofreetobranchoutto
doyourown.

StudentswillbeaskedtosketchoutaplanofactionusingWordPressfortheirscriptfortheir
shortmovie.UsingWordPress,eachgroupwillberequiredtocomeupwithasynopsisofwhat
theirshortfilmwillbeaboutandwhattheywilladdress.Studentswillusethissynopsisasthey
moveforwardincreatingtheirscriptfortheproject.
