Learning Needs
What learning needs did I identify through practice reflection and peer input?
Identify a minimum of two (2) to three (3) learning needs.
The first learning need that I discovered was that I lack confidence in certain situations. I ask questions,
even if I know the answer.
The second learning need is to refresh knowledge on adult populations. Sing I have been exposed to
paediatric patients, I need to remain up to date on health issues and nursing care through the lifespan

Havent done practice reflection yet? Use

the Practice Reflection worksheet to help
you identify your strengths and learning
needs.

Become exposed to and practice more nursing skills, such as taking blood, catheterization, diabetes
management

Learning Goal #1
My goal must be based on my learning needs.
Become more confident in the care that Im providing, my knowledge, and my communications
with other nurses, patients, and the health care team.

Need help creating a goal? Review the

Developing SMART Learning Goals
guide.
Your learning goal must be based on
your current practice setting and one of
the Colleges practice documents.

Professional Standards

Goal #1: Activities and Timeframes

How am I going to achieve my goal? Identify a minimum of three (3) learning activites with timeframes/timelines.
1. Review my notes from class, and also textbook chapters
- Timeline: beginning May 1st, review 2-3 hours per week until I receive my license. Then review weekly as needed
2. When I am working as a nurse, quickly review information about patients condition, meds, and history prior to going to the client. Bring a
notebook with me, with a reminder taped to the cover with the information I need to review. This will help me to answer questions when I go into
a room
- Timeline: First week of my first nursing job, come prepared with a notebook and reminder, and spend 15 minutes after report, reviewing
client information
3. Practice with new grad nursing peers on giving information in a confident manner. Elicit feedback from them on how I can improve, and what
Im doing well. Work with them to determine techniques on communicating confidently with the health care team
- Timeline: May 2016 until I obtain my first nursing job

Learning Goal #2
My goal must be based on my learning needs.
Refresh and maintain knowledge on nursing care for adults

Goal #2: Activities and Timeframes

How am I going to achieve my goal? Identify a minimum of three (3) learning activites with timeframes/timelines.

1. Review notes from classes

Timeline: Starting May 2016 Spend 1-2 hours each week until I obtain my first nursing job.
2. Practice assessments on friends and family who are not in the paediatric population
Timeline: Starting May 2016, do one head to toe assessment each week until I obtain my first nursing job
3. Watch videos on adult assessments
Timeline: Starting May 2016, watch vides 1 hour per week until I obtain my first nursing job

Learning Goal #3
My goal must be based on my learning needs.
Gain exposure and practice with nursing skills that I have not yet had a chance to practice and learn

Your learning goal must be based on

your current clinical practice and the
Nurse Practitioner practice standard.

Goal #3: Activities and Timeframes

How am I going to achieve my goal? Identify a minimum of three (3) learning activites with timeframes/timelines.

- Timeline: June, 2016 (1-2 day course)
2. When I obtain my first nursing job, speak to the more tenured nurses, and let them know that I havent had experience with certain skills
such as catheterization and diabetes management, and ask them to let me observe when they need to perform these skills. Then ask for
assistance and feedback from collegues when I have to perform the skills.
- Timeline: Beginning of obtaining a job, observe collegues 3-4 times per week for the first month of employment
3. Obtain Neonatal Resuscitation Certification
- Timeline: June 9th, 2016

How do my learning goals support my commitment to continuing competency?

How does my learning relate to the competencies of my practice?
They all relate to continuing competency because they will allow me to maintain learned
skills during the time Im awaiting my first job, and also to add on essential nursing skills
which Ill be using in the future. They all relate to core nursing skills.

Continue to maintain and update your

Learning Plan throughout the year.

Evaluation of changes/outcomes to my practice

What did I learn?
What impact has my Learning Plan had on my practice?
I learned that I have to maintain certain aspects of my knowledge on my own because I may
lose certain skills. For example, being in paediatrics means I have had to adjust
assessments, education, and nursing care from the adult population to child relevant
practice. I need to maintain my learning about the adult population so I dont lose that
knowledge.
I also learned that I now need to start going above and beyond the skills learned in college as
I no longer have those mandatory classes to teach me what I need to know. I need to be
proficient now in seeking out my own opportunities for continuing competence.

records.
