Course Title: Inclusion and the Principle of Normalization
Course Code: HSER-2000
Course Description: A fundmental exploration of the principle of normalization and social role
valorization (SRV). Students examine measures and practices that provide
individuals with an intellectual disability a wide variety of opportunities for
inclusion, valued roles in society, and lives lived with dignity.

1. Internalize the principle of normalization as a professional.
1.1 Recite the principle of normalization.
1.2 Discuss the principle of normalization as it relates to the field of intellectual disability.
1.3 Recognize the implications of utilizing or not utilizing the principle of normalization when
working with individuals who are devalued.
1.4 Identify dehumanizing conditions and the impacts on individuals.
1.5 Examine the effects of labeling and the self-fulfilling prophecy.
1.6 Discuss the difference between physical and social integration for individuals with an
intellectual disability.
2. Assess a Human Services program/agency structures and programs to determine the
opportunities for inclusion.
2.1 Identify location and physical aspects of a program/agency.
2.2 Identify socially integrative program structures.

2.3 Identify age and cultural appropriateness of program/agency.


2.4 Identify the developmental orientation of a program/agency.

3. Recognize model coherency in programs available for individuals with an intellectual disability.
3.1 Identify how individuals are grouped.
3.2 Identify the appropriateness of the programs human resources.

3.4 Identify the programs content and its delivery method in relation to the individuals being
served.
3.5 Identify the overt and covert management model for the program.
