2.ThiswasadirectchallengetotheImpetustheoryofmotion,describedasfollows:
Amover,whilemovingabody,impressesonitacertainimpetus,acertainpowercapableofmovingthis
bodyinthedirectioninwhichthemoversetitgoing,whetherupwards,downwards,sidewaysorina
circle.Bythesameamountthatthemovermovesthesamebodyswiftly,bythatamountistheimpetus
thatisimpressedonitpowerful.Itisbythisimpetusthatthestoneismovedafterthethrowerceasesto
moveitbutbecauseoftheresistanceoftheairandthegravityofthestone,whichinclinesittomovein
adirectionoppositetothattowardswhichtheimpetustendstomoveit,thisimpetusiscontinually
weakened.Thereforethemovementofthestonewillbecomecontinuallyslower,andatlength,the
impetusissodiminishedordestroyedthatthegravityofthestoneprevailsoveritandmovesthestone
downtowardsitsnaturalplace.

ThistheoryissometimescalledtheAnimistictheoryofmotionsinceitenvisionsa"lifeforce"being
associatedwithmotion.
Newton's1stlawisoftenverydifficulttograspbecauseitcontradictsvariouscommonsenseideasofmotionthatmay
havebeenacquiredfromexperienceineverydaylife.Forexample,unaccountedforforceslikefrictionmightcausea
ballrollingontheplaygroundtoeventuallystop,eventhoughnoobviousforcesseemtobeacting.
WhenstudyingNewtonianmechanics,itisbesttorememberthisastwolaws:
1.Ifthenetforce(i.e.,vectorsumofallforces)actingonanobjectiszero,theobjectwillkeepmovingwith
constantvelocity(whichmaybezero).
2.Ifanobjectismovingwithconstantvelocity(notspeed),thatis,withzeroacceleration,thenthenetforce
actingonthatobjectmustbezero.
