Nursing 362 leadership

The results of my leadership matrix survey test said that my leadership
style is team leadership. Team leadership is strong on both task and people skills.
Although I got team leadership style I scored on the lower side of the matrix.
Which means that I can work harder in becoming a better leader. Since I just
started nursing school I think that I need to work on my people talking skills. I also
know that I also need to learn how to become a leader because all of my life I like
to be the follower instead of the leader. I also know that nurses need to become
good leaders in order to become great nurses. They are the coordinators or
leaders of the patient's care. What I think I need the most is experience in
becoming a leader. I need to learn to become a leader and not a boss who will
order people around
The management style that I was picked most suited for is shepherds. This
type of managerial style is focused on people pleasing, spontaneous and
accommodating. Shepherds like to guide and encourage their people rather than
directing them. It kind of sounds like laissez faire type of leadership. In shepherds
style they lack in jolting productivity, implementing new projects, managing a
crisis and goal setting. I think to strengthen the weakness of being a Shepard
management style we have to a lot of independent people for this group to strive.
They have to be well trained and know what they are doing. When we have a well
trained group it will off set the weakness of shepherds management style because
it will have people that will know what to do during crisis and having people with
drive with further other people having better goals for one self.
According to Susan E. Kogler Hill team leadership model. A good team
leader needs to be behaviorally flexible and have a wider repertoire of actions or
skills to meet the team's diverse needs(Northouse 2016). I feel after working in
the health care setting for 2 years and my 3 years in nursing school the best
leaders are people that listen to what other people are saying, they inspire the
team towards higher levels of performance and they also need to anticipate
change.
While good characteristic of a good follower would be he has to be open
minded. A good follower will be willing to take new idea's from their leaders,
unpredjudiced. Good follower are also able to be cooperative with their peers.
Being able to become a team player with others is key to success if a group will
fail or pass the project. A good follower need to be able to critical think for himself
and have courage. They need these key traits to think for them self and not follow
mindlessly on what the leader says. They need to be able to give leaders new
ideas and also have the courage to tell them when they are wrong also.
Not only is there leadership styles, there is also follower ship styles. There is
a total of 5 types of followers. First one we have is the sheep. They are the ones
that are the passive ones that you boss around and do whatever you tell them to
do. The next one is the yes people they are the ones that will get the job done and
come back asking what's next? The next follower is like the antagonist of the
group. They will always oppose the leader and bring down the group. They have a

lot of negativity with the plans that are being made. They are called alienated.
Pragmatics are what I like to call the band wagoners of the group. They wait and
see when is the best time to jump in and they only help when the group is doing
good. The last but not least of the followers are the star followers. They are the
perfect example of a good follower. They are postive, give feedback, challenge the
leadership and gives feedback.
