1. Putting on our drama hats

Groupings: whole group/partner
Strategy: Discussion
Administration: Index cards with names written on them, choose
a card
Focus: Provide context and deepen engagement
Each student will draw an index card from a bowl or a hat.

We will give them a piece of paper and have them draw a picture in
response to the following prompting questions: What you see when
you read this word? Can you draw it out?
Then they will share their drawing with a partner, then whole group
(volunteers).
After sharing, we will ask: What can you add to the picture? What
about the setting of the person? Where are they? what are they
doing?
2. Reading the Story
Grouping:Whole group
Strategy:Reading aloud (Teacher)
Administration: Chrysanthemum (storybook)

connections.
Interviews about the first day of school. Students will be in
groups of 3. Each child will pick which letter they will be A, B, or
C. A is going to be the interviewer and will ask B and C how they
are feeling about their first day of school.
4. Continuing the Story
Grouping: 3 groups of 6 students
Strategy: Tableau ( Freeze Frame)
Administration: Open space to complete freeze frame activity
Focus: Have students be mindful of classroom situations and conflict
resolution.
Students will be told that they have to create a situation where
someone is being picked on in their class. Students would get into
the role and freeze in their spot. The teacher will ask the students to

think about what they would say as that character. When you tap on
the student they will say their little blurb.

6. Reflection

Administration: None
Focus: Personal application
Students will recall their picture from the beginning. They will
flip it over and we will ask Now how do you feel about this
name? Does your picture change? If so, how would you
change it? At the end ask What would this person say about
their name now after you have read about Chrysanthemum and
her name?
