Rationale:
As a very new teacher, I relied quite heavily on the textbook and
curriculum already available to me, as to not reinvent the wheel. I
hope, as I become more familiar and comfortable in my role, that I can
stray from the textbook more. However, my current textbook and
curriculum is very well organized and meets the Common Core
Standards, as well as the Colorado Academic Standards, well. Although
there are units specifically focused on fiction, like short stories, poetry,
drama, and epics, informational texts are used to supplement reading
selections throughout the entire course. I feel this is important and
informational text is becoming more and more of a focus in the
standards. However, there is a unit specifically focused on nonfiction,
looking at persuasion mostly; yet, there is some fiction used as
supplement during that quarter too. I feel this mixture of fiction and
nonfiction throughout the entire course gives a good balance and more
depth and relevance to each unit. There is also a writing element at
the end of every unit, relevant to that specific unit. ELA is a slightly
tricky subject, I have decided, because one uses and practices most of
the standards off and on throughout the entire year. I think this placing
calendar demonstrates that, but also shows the focus standards that
are repeated regularly. I was using something similar to this before, but

now I can see the benefits of having my year laid out this way with
direct correlations to the standards.
