Lesson: Physical Science Forces and Motion Push/Pull

Essential Questions
What is force?
What is motion?
What happens when you push or pull an object?
How do objects move on different surfaces?
Learner Outcomes (Instructional Objectives)
Students will be able to:
Describe and explain that force causes motion
Demonstrate how hard and soft force causes different motions
Define force, motion, and surface
Demonstrate correct sign production of vocabulary words
Demonstrate the ability to read the vocabulary words from print
Demonstrate correct pronunciation and articulation of vocabulary words
Tennessee State Standards
Content Standard: Physical Science (Forces and Motion) Standard: The student will investigate the effects of force on the
movement of objects.
Alternate Learning Expectation (ALE):
1. ALE PS. 1A. Understand the basic concept that forces can move objects
Alternate Performance Indicators (API)
Recognize that a push or a pull can move objects
Recognize that objects can move in different directions and at different speeds on different surfaces

Instructional Procedures
Introduction
Introducing Physical Science
Oral Pretest - Define - on their own (First time no help, second time ASL and TC)
Show them the vocabulary list. What words do you know?
What is force?
What is motion?
How do objects move?
How does the surface of an object affect motion?
Record Data What are students oral and signed responses? Use results to help guide pre teaching of vocabulary
Pre-teach Vocabulary - Practice spelling, writing, saying, and signing vocabulary - Write words on notecards
Watch video explain and discuss definitions shown in the video and discuss the video

Developmental Activities
Force and Motion Activities
Students are given a chart (see attached) to predict how far an object will go. Students will have a variety of objects,
cotton, marble, die, and a toy car. They will slide each object down a small ramp onto different surfaces, carpet and vinyl, and
watched as it rolled across each one.
Where your predictions right?
Why did one object go farther than another?
What do you notice about items on the carpet vs the vinyl floor?
Push and Pull
Teacher and Students will read the prompt and play the interactive game about push and pull on the internet.

Conclusion
Post Test (Redo pretest with additional questions)
Test students ability to read and or sign the vocabulary terms using correct sign and speech.
Test students ability to give a new example of something that can be pushed or pulled and if it will be
easy/difficult or fast/slow through, sign, speech, or drawing.
Record Data
Addressing Learners Diverse Needs
Formative/Summative Assessment
Formative Students will show understanding during the lesson by answer questions and giving examples in various
communication modes throughout the lesson. Demonstration of activities and completion of worksheet.
Summative - Pre and posttest reading, signing, and speech articulation and pronunciation of vocabulary words and
giving own examples from memory to the teacher in sign or voice.
Data Analysis and Reflection on Planning/Instruction; Plans for Re-teaching (as applicable)

The data collection of classwork, pretest and posttest (the students formative and summative assessments results) will
determine if additional teaching is needed for mastery of objectives and standards.
Re-teaching plans: Frist, I will ask them what they are having trouble remembering or understanding. If students did
not do well on the post-test and/or they are having difficulty comprehending and remembering vocabulary we will look
them up using a picture dictionary or google. Then we will play a matching game to match the picture to the print, the
picture to sign, and the sign to print. They can make a vocabulary book of written key words, pictures, and drawings to
help them remember.
