Vico Acconi

American sculptor, performance artist and video artist. He initially devoted

himself to poetry and writing but began to produce visual work in 1969, most of
which incorporates subversive social comment. The works of 1969 were
photographic records of actions such as bending and throwing. From 1970 until
1974 he staged a series of activities and performances, such as Broad Jump '71,
a jumping competition for men, with a woman as the prize: the work was
designed to expose the conventions of male ownership of women.

This instalment is called Pornography in the Classroom it is installed using a

projector and a prop which looks like a big camera to show the way pornography
is filmed. It is presented this way to give the effect that Pornography is being
filmed in the Gallery. He is famous for his video instalments and has been known
to present some very strange pieces. Here is an example of one of his other
pieces

Bill Viola

Bill Viola is widely recognized as one of the leading video artists on the
international scene. For over 30 years he has created videotapes, architectural
video installations, sound environments, electronic music performances, and
works for television broadcast. Violas video installationstotal environments
that envelop the viewer in image and soundemploy state-of-the-art
technologies and are distinguished by their precision and direct simplicity. His
single channel videotapes have been broadcast and presented cinematically
around the world, while his writings have been published and anthologized for
international readers.

Five Angles of the Millennium. Each video is projected directly onto a wall in a
dark room and shows a male figure submerging in or remerging from water, at
times diving into the waters surface, and at other times hovering over it. These
actions occur in a continuous loop, which are enhanced by a soundtrack of
underwater noises, including the crashing of waves and colour changes (from
blood red to grey blue). The action of the figure seems fairly simple, in that we
are looking at the rise and fall of a figure above or below a body of water.
However, it soon becomes clear that the trajectory of the figure is not
straightforward. Viola runs the sequences in slow motion.
