Unit Title: Bill of Rights


Grade Level: 4th
Standards:
SS4H5 The student will analyze the challenges faced by the new nation.
d. Identify and explain the rights in the Bill of Rights, describe how the Bill of Rights places
limits on the power of government, and explain the reasons for its inclusion in the Constitution in
1791.
SS4CG2 The student will explain the importance of freedom of expression as guaranteed by the
First Amendment to the U. S. Constitution.

Objectives:
Students will identify the rights and explain the amendments in the Bill of Rights.
Students will explain why the Bill of Rights was included in the Constitution.
Essential Questions:
What rights are listed in the Bill of Rights? Where do we find them?
What is the purpose of the Bill of Rights?
Assessment Plan:
Teacher Observation/ Questions- Throughout the unit the student will ask questions to gage
student understanding.
Student Amendment Definitions- The teacher will review student work for accuracy (the
definition matching what the amendment protects) and completion.
Padlet Discussion- Student will answer a question on a teacher created Padlet. Students will be
assessed on if they complete the discussion, the quality of the answer, and if they participated in
the group discussion.

Unit Plan:
Lesson 1Review- The Founding Fathers have just completed the Constitution. However, so people did
not believe it protected all of our rights. Do you remember how they decided to solve this
problem? What are some of the rights that are protected?
Discuss the students answers. (3 mins)
Teacher will introduce the lesson to the class. (Today you will be learning about each of the
amendments in the Bill of Rights. Your job is to write down freedom protected in each
amendment in your own words. You will remember them better if you write them in your own
words. I have found links for you and your group to work from.) Answer any questions. ( 3 mins)
Students will be broken up into groups to complete the lesson. Try and pair students with better
computer skills with those that are struggling Student will receive a link to the online lesson. As
students follow the lesson, they will write the amendments in their own words on a sheet of
paper. (20 mins)
If groups finish early, they can access the links at the bottom of the page for more practice.
At the end of class, the teacher will go over the amendments, asking students to read what they
wrote. At this time, the teacher will clear up any misunderstandings. The teacher will then collect
the response, to review to accuracy and completions, (10 mins)
Lesson 2-

6) The teacher returns papers from the lesson before.


7) Teacher introduces the lesson to class. How should we act during a discussion? (5 mins)
8) Students will access a teacher created Padlet with the question Which amendment does your
group think is the most important? Why? The group will discuss their answer and then answer
the question with a post on the Padlet.(15-20 mins)
9) If students finish early, the can access the links at the bottom of the lesson page for more
practice.
10) Toward the end of the class, after the student have answered the question, the teacher will go
over the answers with the class. At this time, the teacher can ask questions to help gage the
students understanding of the topic and clear up any misunderstandings. (15 mins)

UDL
1) Students that finish earlier will be given more ways to practice.
2) Have different links with different reading levels.
3) Students who have trouble using the computer will be grouped with student who are more
proficient.
