If you are planning to make many squares you

might want to glue the template to some cardboard, for instance the back of
a note pad, or a cereal box. It's fun to think of new ways to reuse!!
1.
Cut out the SQUARE template for the ornament you want to make.
2.
Place the template on top of the paper and trace around it.
3.
Cut the square out of the paper.
4.
Follow the folding directions to fold the STAR
5.
You may glue it if you like-although traditional ORIGAMI is not usually glued
6.
Add a string and/or hook if you want to hang it as an ornament!

know.

In correspondence with
Patricia Crawford, I learned
that this model came to her
one night in a dream,
complete and intact. She woke
up the next morning and
folded it. It is the most
spectacular example of
inspired creation of which I

This model was always a wonder to me. I've loved mystical

creatures such as unicorns and dragons my entire life, and
as a novice orgamist I thought that to fold this model would
be the ultimate accomplishment. I tried time after time but
my attempts failed miserably.
There are several folding sequences which are tricky. The
model is built upon a stretched bird base with some
additional internal structures, and I could never figure out
how to get from the unstretched base to the stretched
version, because noone had ever taught me the
procedure. It seems I might have once completed the
procedure by accident, and then couldn't get past the
subsequent reversing steps. It is also easier to orient the

internal structures incorrectly than it is to get them right. To

make the model easier to understand, and eliminate these
pitfalls, I've redesigned the folding sequence slightly,
clarifying the steps that I found confusing.
The model should be folded from origami foil or foil backed
paper. A 10" sheet of paper leads to a model
approximately 4" long. It also makes a wonderful miniature.
Try folding it from a 3" piece of Japanese foil.

Origami Santa
This month's (11/93) contribution is from Jim Marshall (mezzrow@aol.com). His
comments:
"I have forgotten where the artwork and folding method for this model originated. All I
know is that I had to recreate the artwork and folding instructions from some crude,
yellowed drawings I hastily scrawled. I gave this piece to friends and colleagues last
year, in lieu of a Christmas card. (It makes a terrific tree ornament.) Unfortunately,
instead of my co-workers doing the folding as intended, somehow I ended up folding
for them. I figured that would be half the fun for them!
Hope I'm not stepping on anyone's copyright! If so, I apologize."
"I noticed errors in the instructions to the Santa fold. The letters attached to the model
points are all fouled up. Follow the diagrams to fold (not the letters) and you should be
OK.
Also, the drawing should be cut out on the inner square, not the outer."
