What technology and how are students using it for this lesson?
Teacher technology:

Animal Photos students will be placing the animals on the board while the teacher reads the questions to the class.
Photos included: cats cows horses pigs llamas (print off at least 30 pictures per animal).
Animal Barn Image- teacher will project this in the front of the room so students can place the images on the front.

Anticipated Prior Knowledge
Students will know how to solve one step word problem within 100.

Lesson Objectives
Assessment Guidelines

3-part measurable objective

(Include scoring key, rubric, etc.)

Skill: Read and solve two word problem using adding and subtraction within 80% accuracy.

Content: Through a worksheet completed in class.

Criteria: students will be able to identify and solve two- step word problem as addition or
subtraction and be able to solve it, with a partner.

Instructional Procedures (identify steps in sequential order)

Differentiation
( including IEP goals being addressed)

A. Engage and Explore

Have computer set up with image of barn ready before beginning lesson.

Begin by asking students if they have ever been to a farm or seen farm animals.
-

Allow 3-5 students to answer and tell their stories if they have any.

Ask students if they noticed how many animals they usually see.
-

Allow 3-5 students to respond (try to allow different students to talk).

Expected answer from students: a lot.

Tell students that they will be working on putting the animals that got out of the barn at a family
friend farm.
Teacher will read the word problems and project the word problem at the top of the barn image.
After teacher has read the problem ask a student to come up and complete the first part of the
word problem, then have another complete the second part. Go over as a class the word problem.
Do this for every word problem: Complete 5 word problems with students.
1. Farmer John has 38 cows on his farm, 12 of them walked out when the gate was left open.
Sarah brought over 8 of Farmer Johns cows back, how many cows does he have now?
2. Mrs. Farmer was feeding her 21 chickens and saw 5 new chickens were born. But as Mrs.
Farmer was leaving 16 of her chickens followed her out the gate, how many chickens are
in the gate eating?
3. Cousin Lewis was watering the 17 family horses, and noticed his 8 friends riding over on
their horses to water them. After all the horses had drank Cousin Lewis road away with his
8 friends, how many horses are still at the watering hole?
4. Sarah was petting all 7 of her llamas, when her mom surprised her with 10 more llamas for
her birthday. Then 5 llamas were born a week later, how many llamas does Sarah have
now?
5. Billy was working on making a pen for all of his 42 pigs, but later in the week his father sold
13 of the pigs to a new farm. Then Mr. Farmer sold 10 pigs two weeks later, how many pigs
does Billy have?
After large whole class has completed the word problem have students get into pairs. Pass out
Animal worksheet. Animal worksheet is to be used as assessment and noting where your
students are having difficulty.
-

Allow 10 minutes for pairs to complete the worksheet.

During pair working time teacher walk around the room with name checklist to write down
observations and ask probing questions such as:
1. Can you clarify why you solved it that way?
The Lesson Plan Format document can be downloaded from the Wittenberg website at the following address: http://www5.wittenberg.edu/academics/education/resources.html

Rv 9/23/15

2. Rephrase student response and ask student if that is correct how I explained it.
3. Can you show me the connection between all these problems?
a. Expected Answer: they are all word problems You have to do more than just one
thing to find the answer.
Have students finish up their work, and go back to their seats with their partners.
B. Explain and Discuss

Open Sharing *

Ask students what was difficult about completing the word problems.
-

Expected answer: trying to know what to use. when deciding to use subtraction or
addition.

Review one problem as a class and chosen by a class.

Make a point to students that you can use different methods such as drawing or writing the
equation.
C. Closure
Review over key words to determine if the problem is asking you to use subtraction or addition.
-

Addition key words: more, joined, added.

Subtraction key words: left, took a way, went a way.

o Tell students to think is the problem telling you more animals are being added or if
they are leaving the group.
Review over two- step problems.
-

Two step word problems you have to do to two operations to find the answer.

Compare a one -step problem to a two -step problem.

o One- step: 56+32
o Two- step: 78-16 + 23

End lesson with telling students that there are multiple ways to solving the problem. Writing out
your work helps you and I (the teacher) see what youre thinking.
Homework & Home Connections:
Students have to create three two -step word problems. They will do them in their pairs as review for next lesson.
Academic Language/Key Vocabulary: (Words and student-friendly definitions)

Interdisciplinary Connections:

Lesson Reflections (Reflection to include supporting evidence)

Which instructional practice(s) work well in your teaching and why; which need to be changed and why?
