ExecutiveSummary
TheMediaCenteratAdairsvilleHighSchoolservesasthetechnologyresourceand
literarycenteroftheschool.TheMediaCenterprovidesservicestoalladministrators,
teachers,andstudents.Withinthetechnologycentertutorials,training,andstaff
developmentareheldtoimplementandintroducenewformsoftechnologystrategiesin
theschool.Thecenteroffersallusersawidevarietyoftechnologytoolssuchasdesktop
computers,laptopcomputers,iPads,television,DVD/VCRplayers,projectors,video
cameras,andheadphones.Digitalcitizenshippracticesareintroduced,reviewed,and
monitoredbythemediaspecialistandteachers.Throughoutthemediacenterthereare
signsandpostersremindingallusersofproperdigitalcitizenshipexpectationsand
requirementswithinthemediacenter.Themostimportantaspectsofdigitalcitizenship
focusedonbythemediacenterareplagiarism,copyrightlaws,andcyberbullying.One
suggestionforimprovementwouldbetoincreasetheprofessionaldevelopment
opportunitiesforteacherstouseWeb2.0toolsintheclassroom.Asecondsuggestionis
tofosterandguidestudentsandteachersinusingBlackBoardasanonlinelearning
environment.
Methods
Iusedavarietyofsourcesincompilingandcompletingtheevaluationreport.ThedataI
obtainedwassupportedbyinterviewquestionsandanswerswiththemediaspecialist
(AppendixA),checklistobservationsofthemediacenter(AppendixB),andtheschool
website(AppendixC).
CenterContextandGoals
TheAdairsvilleHighSchoolMediaCenterhasbeenprovidingtheschoolwithbasic
libraryresponsibilitiessincethebeginningoftheschool.Overthepast12yearsithas
progressedintoa21stcenturytechnologycenter.Thecurrentfacilitywascompleteinthe
summerof2004.Themediacenteroffersallstudents,teachers,andadministratorsthe
abilitytoparticipateinall21stcenturytechnologyopportunities.Dr.LenaAdams,a18
yearmediaspecialist,hasbeenhandsoninseeingandleadingtheprogressionofthe
mediacenter.Dr.Adamsleadsbyexampleinallareasofthemediacenter.Dr.Adams
mainresponsibilitiesincludeleadingthetechnology,maintainingandupdatingthemedia
centerwebsite,literacy,digitalcitizenship,andprofessionaldevelopmentoftheschool
concerningnewtechnologystrategiesandmediapractices.Dr.Adamssendsouta
monthlyemailcalledTechnologyUpdatesaboutnewtools,programs,strategies,and

bestpracticesforteachersandadministratorstoreadanduse.Themediacenterhasan
abundanceofbooks,magazines,newspapers,andDVDs.Themediacenterhas6
desktopcomputersbuttheschoolisonetoonewithDelllaptopcomputers.Theschool
has5computerlabswithanaverageof30desktopcomputersineachlab.
DeborahNationisaTechnologySpecialistassignedtoAdairsvilleHighSchooland
AdairsvilleMiddleSchool.Mrs.Nationhasbeeninthetechnologydepartmentinthe
BartowCountySchoolsystemfor22years.Theprimaryresponsibilitiesofherjob
includemanagingthetechnologyinfrastructureofthebuilding,assistteacherswith
technologyequipmentissues,andmaintainingthecomputerlabs.Themediacenters
stakeholdersincludeteachers,students,andadministration.Themediacenterisan
environmentforallstakeholderstoengagein21stcenturytechnologyopportunities.
Thegoalsofforthemediacenterinclude:
Providingtechnologyservicestoallstakeholdersintheschool.
Providingtheappropriateequipmenttoaccomplish21stcenturyteachingand
learning.
Providingprofessionaldevelopmentopportunitiesforteachers.
Promotingliteracy
Promotingsafeandethicaltechnologyuse.
ContinuetopromoteandincreasevolumeofeBooksandeResources.
CreatewiththeLiteracyTeamaplantoimproveourLexilescoresandaplanto
makestudentstaketheSRItestseriously.

Evaluation
UponreviewingandcollectingthedataoftheMediaCenteratAdairsvilleHighSchool
itisclearthatitperformsandprovidesfortheneedsofstudents,teachers,and
administrators.Dr.AdamsleadstheMediaCenterbyexampleandencouragement.The
supportingstaffdoesanexcellentjobofmaintainingtechnologyequipmentand
accessibilityofalltechnologyresources.TheMediaCenterhasvariousformsof21st
centurytechnologyforstudentsandteacherstouseandcreatewith.Digitalcitizenship
andliteracyareareasofhighimportancetoDr.AdamsandtherestofthefacultyatAHS.
Onesuggestionforimprovementwouldbetoincreasetheprofessionaldevelopment
opportunitiesforteacherstouseWeb2.0toolsintheclassroom.Asecondsuggestionis
tofosterandguidestudentsandteachersinusingBlackBoardasanonlinelearning
environment.
