Unit: Repeating Shapes

Students Will Be Able To: utilize the elements of art and principles of design in a movement
filled-repeating composition.
Art History:
M.C. Escher- optical illusions
Picasso - use of repeating shapes
Hokusai - strong use of lines in the Great Wave of Kanagawa
Art Production/ Goal:
Repeat shapes while having control of the negative space in between shapes as well as
the pressure and the intensity of color
Utilize colors in similar families/color schemes
Skills Learned/Activities:
Consistency of negative space
Color families
Elements of Art and Principles of Design enhanced
Daily Art Journal questions reviewing the Elements of Art
NJCCCS of Visual Art 2014:
1.1.5.D.2 Compare and contrast works of art in various mediums that use the same art
elements and principles of design.
1.2.5.A.3 Determine the impact of significant contributions of individual artists in art from
diverse cultures throughout history.
1.3.5.D.1 Work individually and collaboratively to create 2-D and 3-D works of art that
make cohesive visual statements and that employ the elements of art and principles of
design.

according to established classifications.
