Diversity in the Classroom

Diversity deals with the different ethnicities, cultures, and minorities in the classroom.
Diversity in the classroom can also focus on gender, sexual orientations, economic statuses,
disabilities, social statuses, and giftedness. Being a teacher you have to be ready to deal with all
these aspects and more that are not even listed. Being a teacher, it is important to be fair to each
child or young adult that you come into contact with. Not only because its the right thing to do,
but because it is hoped that the teacher would want to be remembered as one of the best if not the
best teacher that student has ever had.
Problems that a teacher may face in school are children that are not from this culture or
country. Being from a different country, the way of life may different and the culture of the
classroom will be different for the child as well. Things that may seem normal to them or their
family, may not be socially acceptable. Another problem that a teacher may face is misbehaving
children. Some children misbehave because they are bored, they may not feel well, they may be
seeking attention, and or they may have a mental or behavioral issue. To deal with those kinds of
students the teacher must know the student and be able to tell whether or not they are being
themselves. Another challenge a teacher may face is not having the support of fellow staff and

from the principle. The teachers job is not only to teach, but to maintain the safety of the
children. It is hard to do so on their own. Teaching is a challenging enough job on its own. So
having the support of the principals and fellow faculty really does help the teacher out a lot.
There is a new issue that teachers may be facing, which is the LGBT. With social acceptances
changing many teachers and people in high positions dont really know how to handle them
because they never really had to deal with it before. In my opinion the only way to deal with it is
by trying to be as fair as possible and to remember their safety. There are still other people who
hate the LGBT community because they are different and wish to do them harm.
Opportunities that a teacher may face is an exceptional student. Having an exceptional
student in your class may excite a teacher by giving them a new outlook on teaching. Another
opportunity a teacher may face is traveling with other students and faculty abroad. By traveling
abroad a teacher can learn about other culture, ways of life, and while doing all of that teach as
well. Another opportunity teaching is the ability to learn and become an effective teacher.
Becoming an effective teacher not only benefits the students but the teacher. It benefits the
teacher because they learn new ways of teaching. Their students benefit because they may learn
more than one way to do an activity or specific subject.
