Hunger Games Biome Project LESSON PLAN (INQUIRY)

Teacher: Julie Koshy

Subject: Biology

Standard:
S4.C3.PO1. Identify the relationships among organisms within populations, communities, ecosystems, and biomes.
Objective (Explicit):
Create a presentation with a group that discusses characteristics of an assigned biome, addresses human
survivability, and contextualizes the biome in the Hunger Games framework.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT:
Research the biome.
Analyze the biomes characteristics to determine human survivability.
Create and present the project to the class.
Evidence of Mastery:
Students will complete the project with a score of 112/140, graded on criteria specified in the rubrics, to show mastery.
Key vocabulary: biome, climate, temperature, humidity,
precipitation, adaptations, and human survival

Materials:students personal technology


(smartphones, tablets, & smartphones), Hunger
Games project guide, Clips from Hunger Games
movies, textbooks, internet access, projector, and
computer

Explore

Engage/Set: Introduce the project. Who has seen any of the Hunger Games movies? You will all be Gamemakers trying
to persuade the others which biome to use as the arena for the Hunger Games next year.
Teacher Will:
Provide students with the Hunger Games
Biome Project framework and rubrics.
Group students into groups based on their
preference for biomes.
Provide students with class time to work on
the project, answering any clarification questions and
helping them with any issues that arise during the
project.

Student Will:
Read through the packet.
Work in groups to research and prepare the
project, asking the teacher any questions or for help
as needed.

Co-Teaching Configuration/Differentiation
ELL students can use resources in their L1 language if necessary and students with 504 plans can be given
extra time as necessary.
Teacher Will:
Present additional information about nutrient
cycles, community interactions, and adaptations
between workdays.

Student Will:
Take notes and listen to the additional
information. Students will then incorporate the
additional information into their project.

ELL students and students with IEPs or 504 Plans may take guided notes and have access to the key.
Teacher Will:
Have students present their biomes to the
class.

Student Will:
Present their biome to the class. Take notes
when other groups are presenting.

Co-Teaching Configuration/Differentiation
ELLs, students with 504 Plans or IEPs can be given guided notes and video guides.

Evaluate: Assess student understanding and completion of the project based on the rubrics. Students will be asked to
present their biome to the class and vote for which biome will be the next arena.
