Differentiate between a solar and lunar eclipse.
Describe the affect of Earths gravity on the Moon and the Moons gravity on Earth.
Evidence of Mastery: Students write complete a test that covers information regarding the Moons
revolution around the Earth and the phenomena this orbit causes; a score of 80/100 will demonstrate
mastery.
Key vocabulary: lunar, solar, eclipse, tide, rotation,
orbit, umbra, and penumbra.

Guided Practice

Input Instructional

Opening/Anticipatory Set:
Who has noticed that the amount of the Moon that is lit up changes over a month? Who has gone
surfing or some other water sport where you had to watch out for the high tides? These are caused by
the way the Moon moves around the Earth and Sun.
Teacher Will:
Present how the Moons motion causes tides
and eclipses using the PowerPoint and asking
higher order thinking questions.

Student Will:
Take notes and answers questions posed by
the teacher.

Differentiation:
Students who have difficulty writing the notes can be given guided notes.
Teacher Will:
Play the videos and describe how to
analyze the images. Ask students analysis
questions about the videos.

Student Will:
Take notes according to what the
teacher says. Pay attention to questions and

diagrams help.
Teacher Will:
Provide students with the test.

Student Will:
Complete the test independently.

pendent Practice

Differentiation:
A student who has may require extra time or to test in an alternate environment may do so.

Closure/Lesson Summary:
Reflection Card: Why is the way the Moon moves around the Earth and Sun important? What else
would you like to know about the Moons motion?
