Memo

From: Ms. Ragghianti (Media Specialist Practicum Student)

To: Ms. Williams (Principal)
This memo gives an overview of the 2016 Judy Serritella
Exemplary Library Media Program Self-Evaluation
Rubric results as rated by the Medi/Media Specialist at
Crabapple Crossing Elementary School, Ms. Jackson (full
rubric is attached.) Ms. Ragghianti, the masters practicum
student, recorded the levels given and collaborating with
the Medi has developed an action plan to improve the
levels of specific targets.
There are three levels of proficiency basic, proficient, and
exemplary.
There are six categories and twenty-one target indicators.
Category 1: Student Achievement and Instruction. 1
basic, 4 proficient, and 2 exemplary.
Category 2: Technology. 0 basic, 0 proficient, and 2
exemplary.
Category 3: Staffing. 0 basic, 1 proficient, and 0
exemplary.
Category 4: Facilities, Access, and Resources. 0
basic, 2 proficient, and 4 exemplary.
Category 5: Administrative Support. 1 basic, 3
proficient, and 1 exemplary.

Category 6: Staff Development. 0 basic, 0 proficient,

and 1 exemplary.
Overall the school media center is strong, but still has
room to improve.

Action Plan
There are two areas that were identified as basic. These
action steps can improve these areas.
Under Category 1: Target 6. Student achievement is routinely
assessed.

Step 3

.

In the past teachers were solely responsible for student

assessment, however with collaboration the Medi/Media
Specialist and fellow teachers can come together to assess
students in different ways. Technology can play an important
role with student assess within the media center.

For example, the students could take a Kahoot Quiz on the

iPads then that information can be sent online to their
teachers for assessment.

Action Plan
Under Category 5: Target 20. Each local school system shall
spend 100 percent of the funds designated for library media
center costs.

This can be a little tricky because sometimes school

library/media center funds can be taken by other
departments or school needs or wants. It is important to
make the media center an innovative learning space with the
resources it needs to stay relevant and up-to-date with new
books, technology, and other emerging media.

Action Plan
We have also identified one area marked as proficient and
have action steps to move this to an exemplary.
Under Category 4: Target 10. There shall be a plan for flexibly
scheduled library media center access for students and
teachers in groups or as individuals simultaneously
throughout each instructional day.

For an exemplary mark the media specialist continues her

flexible schedule and tries to expand the availability of the
library/media center to the students, staff, and the needs of
students families.
Being respectful of the media specialists time is important
too, so she is not overworked. Therefore, thinking outside the
box is helpful. Having the media specialist come in later then
stay later a day or two each week gives more flexible hours
for after school library/media center use.
