How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronisation to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.

LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

Both LO2 and LO3

In all practical activity learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. They
will work on their own initiative, will not need constant support or supervision, will give the
work their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others, and meet
deadlines. In other words, they will have the kind of self-management skills that would be
expected of them in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken
to mean that learners do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with
their tutor, but rather that they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when
they take advice they weigh it carefully for themselves.

Planning
Brainstorm / mind map (add extra pages if necessary)

I want my advert to
promote a camera, in
order to do this I will
capture different
things surrounding me
and put the images
into Photoshop before
editing them on
premier pro so they
look good as possible
which will make the
advert look more
realistic.

Ideas

Ive wanted to do a stop motion were I

can take pictures, I find this more
easier but complex at the same time
and think it would look good as a tv
advert.

In order to make my
advert, professional I will
be using a high quality
camera, most likely a
Cannon. This is so my
advert looks as smooth
and high quality to make it
stand out to my audience.
My advert appeals to the
majority of the public,
with such a wide range of
audiences, I need to make
sure my advert appeals to
all ages.

Stop Motion- Camera Advert

My idea is to create a stop motion advert based on a quality camera in order to promote it whilst using
stop motion. The genre of is going to be a television advert, I feel like television adverts stand out and
are easier to make as they are short but have to be snappy. The outline of my story is basically
promoting a camera, I will do this by capturing various images to promote the camera, and the images
will be put through Photoshop in order for them to stand out. The start of the advert will begin with the
main story which is two friends messing around having a good time. In the end we will see the two
characters walking away from the camera so the audience connect to the characters more, this way
my target audience will relate to it more as cannon is such a well-known camera and company, it will
be more personal to them and make them want to buy the product more.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

How will you meet the requirements of your brief?

I will meet the requirements of the brief by reaching the requirements of what it
states. The only thing I will be changing is that is wont be a television indent it will
be a television advert. As the new channel starts on the eleventh of March, I will
meet the requirements by having my advert ready to air on the channel.

Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
The only Health and safety issues that may be encountered whilst shooting on
location is tripping hazards.

Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
The only legel issues would be sound and product plagerism, considering that the
camera im going to promoting is a cannon and music im using is of of itunes. I
need to make sure my music is copyright free in order for my video not to get
blocked on YouTube.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Use of possible formats

Circle which of the following formats your animation will take;
stop-frame techniques
photography
plasticine animation
Claymation
using found objects
modelling
puppetry
combined formats

Why are you using that particular format?

I am using this format because it links in with my project, as I am taking photos I will
be photographing my subjects. Photography is a slightly easier subject to use, you
can do so much with photography which allows you to capture anything you want.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
There are no limitations

What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?
Add in links and screen shots of three examples of animations using this format.
I have seen adverts similar to this, which I cannot find, however, another camera advert
named pen shows various images and tells a story of a boy when he was growing up
through pictures, but quick enough to be a stop motion advert, the advert has a deep and
meaningful story to it, its promoting the camera saying its been used for years and thats its
reliable, this is something that I would like to convey in my advert. The song I have chosen I
heared in an advert at the cinema, the song inspired me to create imaginative ideas in my
head, the song home by Edwards M helped me create ideas, the song has such a fresh
and different sound to it compared to other songs, this also helped me in creating ideas
within my animation.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Subject
What will the subject of your animation be?
The subject of my animation is two friends walking, playing and generally doing silly things. I
feel like it will relate to the audience because a lot of people can connect to the characters
and their friendship whilst at the same time promoting the camera. The story just follows the
two of my subjects around two different locations having fun and doing typically what friends
do, which I feel would connect to my target audience as my audience age range is very vast.

Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
The story of my stop motion animation pretty much follows the different subjects in different
locations. As my advert is continuous moving images, it will be quick short and snappy in
order to draw the audience in.

Characters
What characters will be in your animation?
There will be two characters in my animation, however mine are an array of images not clay
models etc.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Movement of Pictures

How are you going to make your Objects move?

My objects are people, so in order for them to move I will direct them in what to do.

What is the purpose of an armature?

There are only pictures in my advert, no armature is used.

Will you use them for your characters?

My characters are real people

Mood board

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Create a mood board showing what look your animation will have. Add images showing
ideas of mise-en-scene, characters, costumes and colours that will be present in the
different shots.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Sets / backgrounds
Will your set be;

A three wall set

A blue/green screen

An existing location

A Combination of two or more of the above

Draw sketches of how your sets/backgrounds will look. Add in labels to your diagrams and
details of
locations / lighting etc.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

Add in photographs of your sets/backgrounds.

Audio and Soundtrack

What audio will you have for your animation?
I will use music from royalty free website, this is to avoid any plagiarism.

Complete the sound list, detailing what sounds you will use, where you will source them,
what equipment you will need to record them and when you will use them in your animation.
You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it
must be more than simply adding a track.

What actions will need sound effects?

Think of the scenes in your animation. Each scene should have different sounds/music to
give information about the mood / emotions of the characters.

Audience
Define the following characteristics of your audience;
Gender
My target audience is aimed at all genders.

Age
The age of my target audience is most likely to be around the ages of seventeen to late
fiftys, the advert is promoting the camera so its really aimed at those have an interest in
cameras or photography in general.

Interests
My target audiences interests are arty things such as photography, people that are
outgoing and go out a lot, as the whole point of photography is getting out and about
taking images.

What forms of animation might they already watch?

In general, as the audience age range is varied, they would watch anything from
advert animation to animation in cinemas.

What images do you think they enjoy watching?

I think my audience enjoys watching rich, bright and bold images. I think my target
audience has a very specific taste when it comes to watching things.

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

What might they consider distasteful or offensive?

Things such as graphic images including pornography, violence and foul language, my
audience would disapprove of very much. I think my audience is more upper class and
would be slightly more intellectual than other people, so in conclusion I defiantly think they
would find any offensive language or violence offensive. My advert will not contain any of
this.

How will you ensure that your animation will suit your chosen audience?
I will ensure my animation suits my audience by using the requirements on the brief which
states it must be fifty seconds long as its an advert, in order to do this I will use at least 20
images or more per second so that the animation flows well and that it capture my targets
audience eye.

How will they physically watch your animation? (i.e in an exhibition format, on screen,
projection, online?)
I want my advert to be broadcast online and on television, this way, it will promote the product
let alone the advert, it being online means more people will see it.

Lighting Design

Where will you be photographing your animation?

Yes

Does it have natural daylight?

My locations are based outside, so all will be natural.

Do you have a constant light source(s) such as a lamp?

Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?
When shooting in the forest in Henley, depending on the weather, Im hoping for it at least to
be bright in order for the advert look like it has good lighting which will meen little eediting will
be needed.

(LO3)

Frame numbers
You will need to label your images as frames
The first 24 frames will be written as;
0_1

0_2 etc etc

the following 24 will be

1_1
1_2
1_3
Ensure your clips are labeled as such. Screen shot the folder your clips are in, and copy the
image underneath.

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.

To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet

To see what action is happening in this shot.

To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).

For example;

Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
