Assessment Overview

Lesson One
Pre-assessment (for learning): Begin class by reading a Hindu proverb. Then, ask if anyone would like to interpret the
poem and if anyone has any prior knowledge concerning Hinduism or Siddhartha.
Formative (for learning): The teacher will place students into 3 small groups and ask each small group to fill out a
corresponding questionnaire (attached at the end of the unit plan) on Hinduism, Hesse, or Carl Jung. While students
research their topic, the teacher will walk around and ask if any student needs help or has questions.
Formative (as learning): Students will be asked to share their answers to the questionnaire in front of the classroom
in order to teach other groups about their topic. Lastly, the teacher will go over the content with a PowerPoint to
answer any last questions.
Summative (of learning):

Lesson Two
Pre-assessment (for learning): The teacher will give the students a quiz over some of the basic concepts in chapter
one of Siddhartha. Along with the quiz, the teacher will go over any questions that the students have concerning the
first chapter. Together, these tasks will help the teacher better understand how much the students picked up from
yesterdays material and assess if some material should be explained again.
Formative (for learning): The teacher will begin the lesson by introducing the students to Buddhism through a
PowerPoint. As the teacher goes through the slides, the teacher will ask questions to make sure the students are
retaining the material.
Formative (as learning): As the lesson progresses, the teacher will begin an in depth reading of chapter two with the
classroom, stopping periodically to ask questions concerning the text and issues dealing with Hinduism, Buddhism,
and Jungian theory.
Summative (of learning):

The opening quiz will act as summative learning of chapter one. Tomorrow the
students will fill out a writing response in regard to chapter two, which will act as summative assessment
for today.

Lesson Three
Pre-assessment (for learning): Begin by reviewing chapter 2 and seeing if any students have questions over the
material. The more questions, the more the teacher must go over previous material and concepts.
Formative (for learning): Answer questions that the students may have concerning chapter two of Siddhartha.
Formative (as learning): Students will receive a writing prompt (shown at the end of the unit plan) over a section in
chapter 2 that they will be asked to write about.
Summative (of learning):

The students will receive a media project due Friday that will demonstrate their
understanding of Hindu and Buddhist thought in Siddhartha and present day media.

Lesson Four
Pre-assessment (for learning): The teacher will hand out quizzes going over chapters 3 and 4 to the students. When
the quizzes are finished, the teacher will ask his or her students if they have any questions concerning the chapters
that have been read so far.
Formative (for learning): The teacher will asks to students to communicate the purpose and outline of their media
projects.
Formative (as learning): The students will work on their media projects thereby answering questions of the media
project and its relation to Siddhartha.
Summative (of learning):

The opening quizzes will act as summative assessments of the students


understanding of chapters 3 and 4. The media project will be presented tomorrow for a grade. The
students scores will reflect their intellectual grasp of Siddhartha and its major themes.

Lesson Five
Pre-assessment (for learning): Begin class by reading a Hindu proverb. Then, ask someone to interpret the poem and
if anyone has any prior knowledge concerning Hinduism or Siddhartha.
Formative (for learning): The teacher will check to see if everyone has sent in their media link. If not, then the
teacher will give extra time for students to finish up any last second details.
Formative (as learning): While students present their media projects, the students that are not presenting will listen
and take notes. The teach will also ask questions during the presentations if the students are not articulating their
points well.
Summative (of learning):

Students will present their media projects and be graded.
