First of all, the librarians are very rude. They often scold us
when we return the books late although we pay the fine. It is hard to

There is insufficient place to sit and read. Our school has
about 1000 students. The library is too small. We have to stand and sit

outside the library along the corridor to read books or newspaper.

Besides, the library has old furniture. The chairs are all rusty

I wish to express my dissatisfaction about the food and service at your

established and well-known restaurant. On behalf of my family, I would Introduction
like to raise a few points regarding this matter. My family and I had
dinner at your restaurant on 08 September 2014 to celebrate my
mothers 50th birthday. We expected to have a great time at your
seafood restaurant but unfortunately we did not.

Your waiters treated us rudely and inconsiderately. We had to wait
for about half an hour before we could order any food. The waiter

spoke to us rudely whilst taking the orders. In fact, he scolded my

mother who wanted to have a cup of tea without sugar. He claimed that
the restaurant does not serve such a drink. For your information, my
mother has diabetes and is trying to avoid taking sugary food and drinks.

The poorly cooked food was also unsatisfactory. We were

Besides, the poorly served food we also felt uncomfortable with the

greasy. There were some cats wandering searching for food. These bad

Then, we recounted the bill and found that out it was wrongly calculated.
The total was supposed to be RM120 but the calculation made by the

Another problem that spoiled our evening was the noisy

surroundings, especially the yelling of waiters and waitresses calling

names and taking orders from the customers. Besides this, the loud
music and noise coming from the kitchen also contributed to this
unsatisfactory situation. What more disappointing were the defective
fans and air-conditioners? The weather was very humid and there were
a lot of people in the restaurant. There are also old and uncomfortable

Hereby, I would like to make suggestions to help you solve these
problems. First of all, I suggest that you look at your restaurant and
make sure no more cats and other stray animals are on your premise.
You should also train your waiters and cooks to provide good service

and food to customers. It would be better to use a calculator to avoid

mistakes in totalling the bill. You need to repair the defective fans and
air-conditioners immediately. Last but not least, cleanliness should be

remember that The Better The Service, The Better The Business.

Synopsis
Sinopsis
Rory and his grandfather, Granda, have been

inseparable ever since Rorys father walked out on them.
Granda suffers from lapses in memory and sometimes
does things such as leaving his pipe to smoulder in his
pocket and disposing Rorys homework in the rubbish
chute. At the same time, he is a charming person with a
generous heart. Rory has been taking care of him until a
fire breaks out at their flat when Granda left the chip pan
on the stove while he went looking for potatoes. The
authorities then decide to separate them with Rory being
sent to childrens home at Castle Street whereas Granda
will be sent to an old folks home at Rachnadar. Rory is
determined to keep the both of them together and he
plants Grandas wscape from the old folks home. They
soon embark on a journey of discovery with strangers
helping them along the way. The authorities are also hot
on their trail. The story ends when Granda and Rory
meet up with Rorys father.

I have read the novel Catch Us If You Can, written by

Catherine MacPhail. It is an interesting novel. One of the main themes
of the novel is love.
First and foremost, Granda has been taking care of Rory ever
since his mother passed away and his father walked out of their life.
Granda sees the needs of Rory in schooling and goes to see the
class teacher whenever being called.
On top of that, Darren gives the key of his moms caravan to
Rory in the Great Escape. Tyrone agrees with her mother Ruby to
help Rory and Granda in their journey because he could empathise
with Rory and his Granda.
Apart from that, Rab gives shelter to Rory and Granda knowing
that they are in trouble. Norma and her daughter, Nicola allow Rory
and Granda to stay overnight at their house.
To sum up, the theme love is shown between the main
character, Rory and the people surrounding him that is his
grandfather, his best friend, Darren and the new friends like Tyrone
and his family, Rab and friends. It is true that Love does not count

characters.
First of all, he is a young boy who is very attached to his aging
grandfather, Granda. His dedication in taking care of Granda
impresses me as it shows that he is a caring and mature boy for his
age.
Besides, his courage and determination to remain united and
close to his Granda even when faced with desperate situations is
endearing. This is especially clear when Granda was admitted to the

many reasons why I choose him.
The first reason I choose Rory is because he was a loving
grandson. Ever since his grandfather had not been well, Rory took
care of almost everything. He would make sure that Granda took his
medicine every day. He would also buy food for Granda during his
school lunch break. To Rory, Granda was everything and he loved his
grandfather very much because after his mother died, Granda was
the only person who brought him up.
Another reason is because Rory was a brave boy and acted
like a savior to his grandfather. First, when he knew that his
grandfather would not last long at Rachnadar, the resting home, he
planned an escape for both of them. He ran away from the orphanage
in Castle Street and saved his grandfather from Rachnadar. This
shows that Rory is brave and cared very much of his grandfather.
In addition, Rory is also a high risk taker because he ran away
with an old and sick grandfather. His plan almost cost him his
grandfathers life when at one point, his grandfather collapsed and
fainted while they were escaping from a house of Rabs friend,
Norma. He received the news from Nicola, Normas daughter that her
mother had gone to the police to report their where about. Therefore,
Rory and Granda ran away again. He planned to take his grandfather
to Liverpool with an intention to reunite with his long lost father.
Based on the reasons and evidence from the novel, I really
sympathize with/admire Rory. From the beginning until the end of the
story, he had to face so many problems. However, in the end he
managed to save both himself and his beloved Granda. He was also
united with his own father and his family.

Based on the novel that I have studied, Catch Us if You Can
by Catherine MacPhail, at the end of this novel, Rory had a great
shock in his life when he thought that his grandfather was dead before
he at last met his biological father and together with his grandfather,
they both reconciled with Jeff McIntosh, Rorys father, his stepmother
and his two sisters. Rory then had a happy time with his new found
family.
When Granda fainted at the bus shelter while on their run,
Rory ran away to get help, leaving Granda at the shelter. He received
a help from a stranger who recognised him from the news on the
television. He and his grandfather were taken to the hospital but on
their way, a man whom Rory thought a policeman in plain clothes sat
beside him in the patrol car and he later found out that the man was
his father.
Rory spent the next few days with his new found family while at
times visiting his grandfather who was recovering at the hospital. His
fathers wife, Karen was kind as she came and asked Rory to go and
stay with them while Granda was hospitalised. He also found out that
he got two little sisters, Ronda 5, and Ava, 3. Granda loved the
granddaughters soon as he saw them even though he was still mad at
his son.
Rorys dad was an apologetic man. He asked for forgiveness
from Rory and Granda every now and then. He was sorry about
leaving his son away with his father because he could not accept the
insults from his father. He asked Rory to give him a chance to be a
good father and a good son to his ailing father. They were given a flat
and helps came around every day which made him wonder why not
before? But he realized that he had found what he had looking for.
In conclusion, I find that the ending of the novel is a joyful one.
This is because Rory had found what he had been looking for, a
family of his own and a comfortable life for his grandfather. It is very
convenient to find that Rory could forgive everyone who had caused
him pain and fear of losing hope. I am also happy to cherish the
friendships that Rory had built with the people he met along his
journey: Ruby, Sammy and Tyrone; Norma, Nicola, Annie, Rab; not
forgetting his ever good buddy, Darren.

It is a memorable event because from there Rory and Granda
started to have more interesting adventures. For instance, Rory had
to urge his grandfather to move faster and in doing so, he could see it
was very funny because Granda was trying hard not to show his
panic. Granda was also forgetting his shoes which Rory had to shove
the shoes to his feet while wrapping his coat and scarf around him
and also buttoning his jacket as well. Rory had also not forgotten his
grandfathers things including the food and warm clothes.
The event is also memorable because Rory and Granda were
always alert for the authority not to get them. He was careful not to let
his grandfather lose the way by taking and pulling his grandfathers
hand at him. He also flung his hand phone into the bushes because it
would be useless to him since the phone had run out of battery and
there was no way for him to charge it.
It is a memorable event because from there Rory and Granda
met more kindhearted people who jumped in to give them a helping
hand. For instance, the man and his son, Sammy and Tyrone whom
Rory and Granda met at the loch while they were fishing the other day
helped them by giving them a ride in their caravan to get away from
the camp site which was full of police and their search party. Sammys
wife Ruby gave Rory and Granda food and drinks in the journey. This
also tells us that not all strangers that we meet are bad people or
unkind. We should learn to respect people in order for people to
respect us.
In conclusion, the most memorable event from this novel is the
part when Rory and Granda got away from the caravan because this
has caused them to face more interesting adventures and
encountered with some kind-hearted people like Sammy, Ruby and
Tyrone.

message the author conveys is that we must show respect and
concern for others and uphold their rights.
We are told that people like Granda need special care and
attention. Rory remembers that the good days when his Granda made
toffee apples for him, put up Christmas trees and carried him on his
shoulders at footfall matches. He remembers Grands better moments
and therefore wants to care for him now. Rory hides Grandas
smoking pipe and drills him on how to behave at Parents Night. Rory
treats his Granda with respect all the time and even when he teases
Granda, it is done in a kind and humorous manner.
The authorities think that Granda should be put away in an old
folks home but both Rory and Granda think that is not right. Granda is
unhappy about it and does not want to be separated from Rory. I think
the elderly should have their wishes respected and be cared for at the
same time. They must have proper home help, meals and medical
care. They have done much for us before. Now it should be our turn
to do good for them. Let them live their remaining days in pride and
dignity.
Children need to be given the right care and attention too.
When they become careers, it is harder for them to enjoy the
childhood they are entitled to, go to school and get the right
education. So it is important that they get the use of proper services
from the authorities. They emotional needs too must be addressed.
People who are different from us must be treated with respect.
Take the travelers for example. People look down upon them, but
they have their rights too and need to be treated with respect and
dignity. This is an important message that is most relevant in todays
world.

In Catch Us If You Can by Catherine MacPhail, I learnt about

compassion for fellow human beings. Many characters
exhibit
compassion for each other and act in a kind manner because of their
compassionate nature.
Rory and Granda care for each other and there is compassion
in their actions. Rory cares for his grandfathers well-being and
protects him from anything he considers bad, offensive or dangerous.
Granda tries his best to help Rory unfortunately makes mistakes, but
there is still compassion. He strongly says that no grandson of his is
going to a home for as long as he is around.
Dr Nicol, Val Jessup, the police and the nurse act
compassionately towards Granda and Rory. They are affected by the
dilemma of an ageing man who is so dependent on a young boy and
therefore do what they think is the best. Even Darrens mum thinks
Rory has taken on too big a responsibility and worries over him. Mrs
Foley, Rorys teacher, wants to foster Rory because of this same
reason.
Darren offers his mums caravan to them because he cares for
Rory and Granda. He warns them about the arrival of the police. Tony
and Tom look after Rory in the childrens home because they know he
is miserable. Sammy, Ruby and Tyrone help pair on their escape
because of their kind nature. All the others, like Bernie, Rab, Annie
and Norma are concerned about the pairs well-being. They feel for
both Granda and Rory and do their best to make things better for
them.
I think the nature of the characters proves that the author thinks
that being compassionate helps you lead a good life.

Sinopsis
Azreen takes time off from her studies in London, UK, to

return to her village in one of the legendary islands of
Langkawi. She returns to mourn the loss of her older
sister, Madhuri. However she finds out via rumours and
loud whispers that Madhuri was murdered. At her village
Azreen has to contend with a cold-hearted father and
support an Alzheimer stricken mother. Azreen is
subjected to negative comments and suspicion from her
neighbours. She finds consolation in the company of the
Old Lady, an outcast of the village.
Azreen has to confront the mystery that shrouds her
sister's sudden death under suspicious circumstances.
Her old classmate, Mohd. Asraf, refuses to reveal what
he knows. A mysterious figure keeps on watching Azreen
and strange things happen. Madhuris room is partially
destroyed in a fire. A carcass of a chicken with a broken
neck is thrown in front of her house. Many villagers fall
sick for no apparent reason. The Old Lady is killed in a
fire accidentally caused by an angry Mohd. Asraf. Bit by
bit, the mysterious death of Madhuri is revealed to
Azreen.

Write about an important lesson that you have learnt
The Curse by Lee Su Ann many lesson for its readers. One of
the lessons is truth will be known and secrets will last forever. There
are a few characters who kept secrets and eventually the secrets
were exposed.
First of all are Mohd. Asraf and Madhuri. They were secret
lovers. They planned to secretly run away to Kuala Lumpur. After
Madhuri died followed by hid grandmothers death, he almost lost his
mind. Keeping his love a secret was very difficult. He was easily
influenced by Puan Normala that his grandmother was poisoned by
Old Lady. That was the reason why he burned the Old ladys house
causing her death. Finally, he realized his mistakes and come to his
senses.
Secondly is En Saleh Abdullah, Azreens father. He was always
proud of Madhuri. Madhuri made him proud when she agreed to
marry the village headmen, haji Ghani. When her affair was
discovered, Encik Saleh got very angry and accidentally killed
Madhuri. He never told anyone until Azreen confronted him. Actually,
he was ashamed because the daughter he was really proud of had
an affair and tried to run away. He kept seeing a ghost. He suffered a
heart attack and died.
In a nutshell, dark secrets only life difficult. The evidence in the
story has shown us that. Any dark secrets we have destroy our lives.
We may lose the people we love. Always be true to ourselves and do
not take advantage of others and always think before we act.

I consider an event that look place in Chapter 10 of the novel,

The Curse a memorable event. That event took place when Asraf
told Azreen that Madhuri has always been the women he loved
although he knew she was a married woman. In fact the fell in love
with her the moment he met her. His love for Madhuri was
reciprocated. When Azreen heard his confession, she shocked
beyond words as she had feelings for him. This incident is
memorable as I learnt about control of ones emotions. Because
Azreen was able to control her anguish and pain, she became a
stranger person.
This event also taught me about being able to forgive. Azreen
learnt to forgive Asraf for betraying her love for him. At last she
realized that when she put aside all her anger, hatred and sorrow,
she felt happier and all her emotional burden suddenly disappeared.
Thus, the ability to forgive is a noble act.
After Asraf confessed to Azreen about his relationship with
Madhuri, it is was followed by a series of news. Azreen learns from
the bomoh that Madhuri was not her real sister. The bomoh also
confessed that he was the one left the gate open and had indirectly
led to the motorcycle accident that paralysed her mother. All these
shocking incidents had caused so much hurt to Azreen who had no
choice but to put all these behind in order to live a life with no
resentment and anger. In fact, when she visited the graves of her
family members she felt overwhelming peace.

I like him because Colin shows maturity beyond his age.

Although Colin is perhaps too young to understand the conflict faced
by the adults, he has deep hidden feelings about the matter. He
shows maturity by not telling his mother about his feeling towards
his stepfather, Jack. However, Colin still loves his mother and
accepts the situation. He never blames his mother like any other
children of his age. Instead, he defends his mother's actions. Thus,
his maturity has actually made me like his character very much.

determination. He is determined to look for his stepfather. First, he
writes a letter to his stepfather in his effort to locate his
whereabouts. Then, he saves every penny whenever he gets the
chance. For example, he always prefer cash for Christmas present

does all this because he is determined to leave home one day when
he is old enough to look for his beloved stepfather. As a child he
does not give up easily but makes a plan to achieve his dreams. I
adore him for his strong will.
Finally, Colin proves to be a very sentimental person. He
remembers everything about his stepfather. He remembers how his
stepfather rolls his own cigarette out of tobacco tin. He also
remembers the many names that his stepfather gives him - 'Col,
Collie, Sonny-Boy, Buster and Bluebird'. He misses the times when
his stepfather walks with him to school and pushes him up the swing
in the park. In fact, he keeps an exact account on how long his
stepfather has been gone which is five years, eight months and
seven days. The sentimental values in Colin is the reason why he
can stay loving towards his stepfather after so many years. He
treasures all the good things Jack does for him and that has given
him strength. Therefore, i also admire Colin for being a sentimental
person.

The novel that I have chosen to portray the theme of family love is
Step by Wicked Step by AnneFine. This novel is regarding five
British school children from Stagfire who shared their joys, sorrows
and anxieties of their family life. It all begin when they arrived ahead
of their classmates for a week-long field trip at "haunted' Old
Harwick Hall. In the stormy wild night, Claudia, Pixie, Robbo, Ralph
and Colin find a long-abandoned secret room containing a
mysterious journal with the aid of flashes of lightning. They uncover
a heart rending story of Richard Clayton Harwick, who runs away
from the sinister influence of a loveless stepfather. This discovery
triggers off each of them to reveal and share their own engrossing,
heart-rending stories filled with hurting and healing moments way
through a minefield of embittered or uncommunicative or just plain
immature parents, insecure or reluctant step parents and resentful
step siblings. The implied themes in this novel are revealed through
the characters thoughts, speech, actions, reactions and what others
say about them. Thus, based on this novel, I have chosen to write
on Richard Clayton Harwicks family members who have portrayed
the theme of family love amazingly and dramatically through sense
of love, devotion and loyalty.
Richards mother, Lilith was the first to portray the sense of
love in the family. She took all the trouble to search for Richard after
he ran away from home. Richard was frustrated as his mother
married Reverend Coldstone after his father's death. Lilith suffered
Coldstones anger as when she spent a fortune seeking for Richard,
their money lessened. Out of love for her beloved son, Richard,
Lilith willingly sacrifices her wealth. She never stopped searching for
him until her death. She died of broken heart because of her
undying love for her beloved son, Richard.
Charlotte showed her love too through her devotion. She kept
searching for her beloved brother, Richard, after her mothers death.
However she faced trouble as she had no money of her own.
Because of her strong family love, she married a rich man she did
not love as he promised to help her find Richard. She was willing to
sacrifice due to her immense devotion to her brother. She managed
to reveal her selfless characteristic through her quest for her
brother.
Richard also showed that he had strong love for his family
through his sense of loyalty. Before Richards father died, he tells
Richard to take care of his mother and sister, Lilith and Charlotte
Harwick. Richard become depressed as his father had only thought
of his mother and sister instead of him until the end of his life.

Richard become more tensed when his mother marries Reverend

Coldstone, who is cruel towards him. Richard is then sent to a
boarding school called Mordanger School, where he still suffered.
Then he decides to run away and sail all over the world. Although he
ran away, he still came by the house twice to catch a glimpse of his
mother and sister due to his love that still lives in him, He finally
returns home after he found a note on the captains table from the
solicitors who have stated something to his advantage. He
discovered a letter from his beloved sister, Charlotte, who had
written before her death, In the letter, Charlotte reveals all the
difficulties they had had to undergo. He realized that his mother and
sister was searching for him deliberately. He has restored his loyalty
in the end but his loved ones are gone forever. His final decision of
whether to stay or leave Harwick Hall remains unknown while the
family love will remain in his memories for the rest of his life.
This novel managed to prove that strong family relationship
sustains family bond and heals all the hurting moments through
sense of love, devotion and loyalty. The power of family love leads
to reunion and healing in a family. Therefore, we should appreciate
and love our family unconditionally and be prepared to make

A memorable event and how the event affects one of the characters
in the story.
I choose the novel Step by Wicked Step written by Anne
Fine. The memorable event from the novel is the honest
conversation between Pixie and her stepmother Lucy. I think that
the conversation is important because it affects Pixie's life.
First of all, I think that the conversation is important because
Pixie has a chance to tell the truth about her feelings. Pixie tells
Lucy that she hates to pretend that their family is normal. It is hard
for her to accept strangers as family. She dislikes her stepsisters.
When Hetty moves into Pixie's bedroom after quarreling with
Sophie, Pixie is very angry. She tries many ways to get rid of Hetty.
Apart from that, I think that the conversation between Lucy
and Pixie is important because Lucy also gets a chance to express
her feelings towards Pixie. Lucy hates being a step mother. It is very
hard for her to take care of someone else's child. Lucy is angry
when Pixie when Pixie tries to get rid of Hetty from her bedroom.
Last but not least, I think the heart to heart conversation is
memorable because it improves the relationship between Pixie and
Lucy. They understand each other better. at the end of the
conversation, they are crying and hugging each other. After that
day, their relationship becomes better and they are more like a
normal family.
In a nutshell, I think that the honest conversation between
Lucy and Pixie is memorable because it improves the relationship
between Pixie and her step family. I learn many things from this
novel.

Paragraph
The novel that I have read is Step by Wicked Step by Anne

Fine. The character that i admire because of the positive qualities is
Robbo.
Robbo is a kind person. His immense kindness was evident in
the way he sought to protect Dumpa. Even though he wished his
parents were back together, he worried about how it would affect
Dumpa. He did not want his baby half-brother to have to go through
the pain and suffering he and his sister had experienced during his
parents frequent arguments and final separation.
Robbo is also very understanding and sensitive person. He
understood why Roy felt unwelcome in the house and that the only
reason he remained there was for Dumpa. The burden and strain
his mother went through while trying to referee the fights between
Roy and Callie was not lost on Robbo either. He was willing to put
himself in his mother's and Roy's shoes and tried to understand their
pain.
Finally, Robbo's best quality is his maturity. Due to his maturity,
he was able to accept his parents' separation and bot be jealous or
resentful of Dumpa and Roy. It also helped him realize that drastic
changes were needed to keep the family together and to come to a
solution that would benefit all parties. He showed a maturity beyond
his years when he confronted his mother and sister directly and
dealt with the situation once and for all.
These are some of the positive qualities that Robbo has
displayed and which have drawn my admiration.

Similarities and Differences
Paragraph
The novel that I have read is Step by Wicked Step by Anne Fine.
There are glaring differences and some similarities between Richard
and Robbo. They both make a good comparison of characters.
For similarities, both are products of a broken home and both
have to adjust living with a stepfather. Their stepfathers are difficult
to live with and so conflicts arise within the family. But this is where
the similarities end.
Their differences are more marked. Robbo refuses to let his
stepfather ruin his happiness. He even tries to mediate between
Callie, his old sister and Roy, his stepfather. He loves his halfbrother like his own. When situations prove to be difficult, he chips in
to help his mother and stepfather.
On the other hand, Richard handles things differently. His
arguments with his stepfather are so bad that it is impossible for
them to love together. He is too stubborn to compromise or at least
try to make things better. He allows his stepfather to make his home
like a tomb as he calls it. He feels like a stranger in his own home.
Not surprisingly, he chooses the cowardly way of leaving home. This
is something Robbo would never do. He chooses to make the best
of a challenging home situation.
These are some of the similarities and differences between
Richard and Robbo.
