BOOK TRAILERS

Monday, November 17th: Book Trailer Introduction
Objective: By the end of this lesson, the students should understand
what a book trailers is, why people make them, and a rough outline of
their book trailer assignment.

Procedure:
- Introduce book trailers
Show movie trailers
Show 3 book trailers
-By watching those two different kinds of trailers, how are they
similar and how are they different?
- Explain assignment:
- Promote the book we have been reading to other students their
age
- Create their own book trailers which communicate the key details
of the
plot (without spoilers!)
- They will introduce the main character(s)

-They have to communicate one or more of the key themes


- You will be making a book trailer in a group with the Ipads
- We will be using the 5 stories we have read in our reading textbook
- Pick what story you want to do
*Give the students about 10 minutes to flip through the stories to
decide
Stories:
- Ananses feast: Spider who had a feast but didnt want to share
with anyone. She invited turtle over to share the feast but kept making
him wash him hands and then they would get dirty again when he walked
back to the table. Spider ate all the food. Then Turtle had a feast
underwater but spider couldnt stay underwater for a long time so she
didnt get to eat any of his feast.
- Thunder Cake: the little girl was afraid of thunder so she and her
grandma were going to bake a thunder cake to keep her from being
scared. Grandma taught the little girl how to watch and count for the
storms. Before the storm came, they were trying to get all the ingredients
before the big storm came
- One Grain of Rice: The raja took all the rice and said he would give
it back before the big famine. He didnt give it back before the famine and
so the people were going hungry. This little girl convinced him to give her
the grains of rice back twice as much as the day before and eventually
she got back all the rice for the people.
- The Woman Who Outshone the Sun: the girl who was new to the
village wasnt like everyone else. She was beautiful and could sing like a
bird. Nature loved her and all the other people make fun of her and didnt
like her because she was different and nature loved her. She was sad
because people were making fun of her so she left, but when she left the
river went with her. Then the people of the village didnt have any water
because the river left with the girl. The people of the village had to
apologize to her and convince her to come back so they could have the
river back.
-Flight: The story of Charles Lindbergh and his journey across the
Atlantic Ocean to Paris, France. He couldnt sleep or eat if he was going to
make it there alive. He faced rain, clouds, and cold weather. He had to
travel by the stars and the edges of land because there was a fuel tank in
front of his plane and he couldnt see out the front.
-Based on their story preference, I will put them into group
- Give the students the basic requirements for their book trailer
- Title and Author
- Picture of the story cover
- Original captions
- Main characters
- Problem in the story **give examples from one or two stories**

- Hook question at the end to get students to want to read their


stories
- Outline
- Get with group and talk about the story
- Start working on their outlines

Tuesday, November 17th: Book Trailer


Objective: By the end of this lesson, the students should finish their
written outlines, pick a genre for their trailer, take a picture of their story,
and finish 4 captions with pictures.
Materials:
- Ipads
- Outlines
- Textbook
SOL:
-Reading 3.11 The student will write a short report.
a) Construct questions about the topic.
b) Identify appropriate resources.
c) Collect and organize information about the topic into a short report.
d) Understand the difference between plagiarism and using own words.
-Reading 3.12 The student will use available technology for reading and
writing.
Procedure:
Review what a book trailer is It gets other people interested in our book
and makes them want to read it. It tells them who the main characters
are, the setting, the plot, and the problem. *without spoilers*
-Written outline
-Finish outlines and have them checked
-Genre
-Each group will pick the genre they want on the iPad program
- Outline
-Students will type their outline into the program
**Each student types in one thing and passes it to the next student.
They will be in a rotation so each student gets a turn with the Ipads**
- Picture
- Each group will take a picture of the story cover in their textbook
- Captions
- 4 captions WITH pictures completed

Wednesday, November 19th: Book Trailer


Objective: By the end of this lesson, the students should finish their
written outlines, pick a genre for their trailer, take a picture of their story,
and finish 4 captions with pictures.
Materials:
- Ipads
- Outlines
- Textbook
SOL:
-Reading 3.11 The student will write a short report.

Finish any uncompleted objectives from yesterday

Thursday, November 20th: Book Trailer


Objective: We are watching the final products of the book trailers
Materials:
- Ipads
SOL:
-Reading 3.11 The student will write a short report.
a) Construct questions about the topic.
b) Identify appropriate resources.
c) Collect and organize information about the topic into a short report.
d) Understand the difference between plagiarism and using own words.
-Reading 3.12 The student will use available technology for reading and
writing.

HOMEWORK: AR Book

Friday, November 20th: Readers Theater


Objective: By the end of the lesson, the students will know what a
readers theater is, their groups, and have copies of their lines
Materials:
- Pirates Adventure (9 copies)
- Pop Pippity Pop (8 copies)
SOL:
-Reading 3.1 The student will use effective communication skills in group
activities.
- Reading 3.2 The student will present brief oral reports using visual
media.
Procedure:
- Show them an example online

- Talk to the students about what a readers theater
- it helps with our fluency, we get to make/use props, and perform it in
front of people
- We will be splitting into 2 groups and doing two different readers
theaters
- Give them a rough estimate on how many days we will be spending
on this
- ~3 days? (Intro and audition day 1, make props and practice day 2,
perform day 3?)
- One group will have 7 and one group will have 8 students
- 7 person story: Pirates Adventure
- 8 person story: Pop Pippity Pop
- Allow the students to choose which group they will be in
*if they get our of hand and cannot decide, then split into ability
groups*
- Once students are split into their groups, have each student read over
the entire script about 2 times.
- After they get a feel for the story, have them discuss it with their group
- Then, the students will each pick a part that they would like to be in the
story
- I will hold a mini audition with Mrs. Kimble and we will assign parts in
class
- After parts are assigned, we will group the students and have them
practice reading their stories several times
