Science Specific Learner Expectations

GLE 1 Investigate and describe, in general terms, the role of different substances in the
environment in supporting or harming humans and other living things
SLE 1.3 Describe and illustrate processes by which chemicals are introduced to the
environment or their concentrations are changed
SLE 1.4 Describe the uptake of materials by living things through ingestion or absorption,
and investigate and describe evidence that some materials are difficult for organisms to
break down or eliminate
SLE 1.5 Identify questions that may need to be addressed in deciding what substances
in what
amountscan be safely released into the environment
SLE 2.1 Identify substrates and nutrient sources for living things within a variety of
environments
SLE 2.2 Describe and illustrate the use of biological monitoring as one method for
determining
environmental quality
SLE 2.3 Identify chemical factors in an environment that might affect the health and
distribution of living things in that environment
GLE 3 Analyze and evaluate mechanisms affecting the distribution of potentially harmful
substances within an environment
SLE 3.1 Describe mechanisms for the transfer of materials through air, water and soil;
and identify factors that may accelerate or retard distribution
SLE 3.2 describe mechanisms for biodegradation, and interpret information on the
biodegradability of
different materials
SLE 3.3 comprehend information on the biological impacts of hazardous chemicals on
local and global
environments
SLE 3.5 investigate and evaluate potential risks resulting from consumer practices and
industrial
processes, and identify processes used in providing information and setting standards to
manage
these risks

Procedure
-Welcome, recap (last class we were working on water pollution
readings and presentations
- Housekeeping items from last week:
-Hand back Visually Identifying a Pollutant Lab questions
Reminders need homework marks for 3 students

-Give groups 10 min to quickly run through with their groups what they
are doing from last class (Pollution Groups)
-Water Pollution Groups (Reading Groups)
-based on your reading each group will physically
represent and present key ideas to the class
- Group Presentations
-presentations not marked by me, but they are informational for
peers
-during presentations, peers will fill out a recording sheet
to write down key ideas from the presentation
-after a performance, summarize the key points (ensure
students copy the key points onto their worksheet)
-Snowball fight using recycled paper (NIMBY) 2 min
-did you clear your yard?
-did any of your garbage actually go away?
-this recycled paper represents the millions of tons of
plastic that get dumped into the ocean or goes into
landfills by human waste & activity

-how much do you contribute to the Pacific Garbage Patch?

Explain Garbage Project

-Each student will receive a plastic bag that they will carry
around with them for 3 days Thur, Fri & Saturday (students will
deposit all of their waste, packaging, gum wrappers, plastic,
Kleenex etc in this bag and bring it where ever they go for 3
days)
-On Monday students will bring their bags bag to school & will
write an individual reflection on their garbage project
Closure: What is tomorrows quiz on? (Acid rain, water pollution,
toxicity, ppm)

Sponge
-Students who are done working on their presentation can begin to fill out
the information from their group on to their Water Pollution Presentation
Worksheet
-Students who have performed their presentation can review for upcoming
quiz (tomorrow) or read silently
