Racism, the Continuous Battle

Racism seems to be a reoccurring issue that still remains alive in our world today.
Although, discrimination can be towards sexual orientation and gender; I feel that race is a
bigger issue in society. I believe this to be true because of the common actions that play out
against people of color on a day-to-day basis. Everyday people of color are deprived of equality
and equal opportunity. I believe that everyone desires equal opportunity no matter the persons
ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. I believe that people judge others based on stereotypes. I
stand firm in the fact that the only way to overcome racism is to over see the stereotypes and not
judge people for the color of their skin.
I believe we live in a society where judgment is used habitually. We also live in a society
where stereotyping becomes the norm. People today judge others more harshly than they judge
themselves. People are so quick to express their judgments and opinions about others rather than
taking the time to step back to see what problems they have with themselves. I believe judgment
comes for ones personal hate, insecurities, or even jealousy. I have been guilty of judging
people and can easily say that it has come from my own self-doubt and insecurities. I believe
people are intimidated of the unknown, they are quick to cast judgment when they are unfamiliar
with another persons lifestyle or ethnicity. I believe this is where racism comes into play.

Racism is like fighting an uphill battle, just when you think it is something we can
conquer as a society, a controversial incident happens and we fall back to where we started. I
believe that racism will always be an issue; until people stop judging others, people stop
believing that one race is more dominate than another. We have overcome the harshest days of
racism, such as slavery and segregation, but we are far from overcoming racism as a whole. I
believe that people believe that we have overcome racism because we are integrated, but I
believe that this is not the case. I have encountered and observed many acts of racism in today's
time. I believe that racism is not only through big actions such as racial profiling, but also
through small comments, opinions, and remarks.
There is such a thing as unintentional racism like people stating their opinions about
people of a certain ethnicity. I have heard people say unnecessary comments, state their
opinions, and remarks. For example, some people have their opinion that all black women are
loud and ghetto and if they are not what they are perceived to be, they are now black women who
want to be white. I believe that this statement is very offensive, because it seems to me that some
people believe that black woman are incapable of speaking and carrying themselves properly
with out wanting to be a different race. I believe that there are also bigger problems of racism
today such as racial profiling. Racial profiling has lead to unfair judgments, which leads to
unequal opportunities, for example, job opportunities. If we end stereotypes and stop making
judgments about one another we will be able to see that we are all equal and we all deserve equal
opportunity. We would see more equality and racism would eventually be something that
happened in the past.
