Students will be able to research and describe one of the different classes in a power point with 100%
accuracy.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
TN Core Standard: GLE 0507.5.1 Investigate physical characteristics associated with different groups of
animals.
MATERIALS:
My own power point lesson/quiz
A handout with instructions for the students PowerPoint creation project
A handout with some of the basic principles of each class.
Asking the students to create their own PowerPoint, to describe one of the classes that we discuss, will
incorporate technology. They will have to research their class a create a presentation. You need to have power
point accessibility as well as access to search engines. However, if you are at a school that does not have these
capabilities, encyclopedias and things of that nature are always applicable. They could draw and write out their
slides if PowerPoint is not available. I chose this because I feel like PowerPoints give students a way to express
themselves; they get to pick their own themes, images, and fonts, etc.
What is the critical academic language (general and technical) that must be addressed in this lesson?
Names of Classes
PowerPoint Terminology
Proper names for characters
How does this lesson connect with and build on the previous lesson(s)?
I would present this lesson either before or after a lesson discussing different
habitats, the combine the two and have students place different animals into their habitats.
How do you expect to build on this lesson in subsequent lessons?
Combining it with the habitat lesson
In later lessons about reproduction this will be a key lesson. Knowing which
classes give live birth or lay eggs will come into play.
Why will you need to plan differentiated activities or assessments?
Because students learn differently, but also hearing something several different
ways helps reiterate the concept.
Minutes)
3. Pass out rubric for their PowerPoint project and explain in detail. (20 minutes)
4. Discuss and give tips for effective research techniques.
Closure: To close the lesson, I will show them an example of their project should look like and have them begin
their research.
ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
Power Point with quiz questions/lesson attached on separate document.
PowerPoint rubric attached on separate document.
MODIFICATIONS:
List specific modifications for students who did not master the objectives.
List specific modifications for students who are ready for enrichment activities.
For students more on the technologically advanced side, I would have them add
some special effects to their PowerPoint.
For students who are more academically advanced I would give them the
opportunity to learn more by providing some websites that have some interactive activities to
work on upon completion of the project.
I think it is important to provide enrichment activities for both of these types of
advancement levels. I feel like often times the technologically advanced part is overlooked and
for some students it can become their career, and they may have no other place to feed the
passion they have.
