How to use this booklet

You will need to complete every page of this booklet, and all sections / questions
required.
Assessment criteria for Distinction grade;
LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Precise and workable planning of timing and synchronisation to a soundtrack will be
produced. It will be clear at this stage, from the documentation, what the finished piece will
look and sound like.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.
LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.

What are the risks?
Some risks of filming in the studio are things such as:
Tripping over wires
Hot lights
Electricity
All of these things you must be aware of when in the studio, even better you could prevent
them from happening.
How will you meet the requirements of your brief?

I am going to be making a 30 second TV Advert advertising Lego. My brief states that it
needs to be glossy and snappy, in other words it has to look professional. To reach this
outcome my use of stop motion will be of a very high standard. I can do this by having a
frame rate of 30ps or more meaning that the movements will look smooth and real. Another
way in which I can meet my brief requirements is involving my Product Logo in the advert, I
am going to revolve the advert around creating the logo from Lego which I think is a very
clever technique to meet my brief requirements.
Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
As I am using Lego in the production of this TV advert there will only be very small risks in
what I am doing, there should be no Lego lying around on the floor as people could tread on
it and hurt themselves and at no point should people attempt to eat the Lego.
Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
There a very high chance that Legal issues will come into place during the production of this
advert as the Copyright law will come into it, I am looking to use commercially available
music which means music that already exists. If the artist want to they might want to take
action with this and take down my video for Copyright. To prevent this I will email the artist
for permission if I can use their music in my production. Because Lego as a product is aimed
from 3 years onwards my advert will not be shown at a time where this age group is
available to watch it otherwise I can be prosecuted for false advertising or misleading
information. Plagiarism is another issue I might encounter, as I am making an advert for an
existing product which isnt my own then they might want to take action for this and involve
Copyright.

Why are you using that particular format?

My task is to create a stop motion animation and therefore I will be using this format to
achieve my brief. I will also be using found objects (Lego) to do so meaning this is another
category my production will fall into in terms of formats.
What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
As I am using Lego men they have adjustable arms and legs meaning I can do more than
just shuffle them along the screen, I can give them a proper effect of walking and moving
objects using these things to help me. It makes the advert look more professional or glossy
as the brief says. I can also use the Lego itself to advertise the product which is what I am
going to try and achieve. To do this I will have the lego men using their building blocks to
create a structure the shape of an L.
What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
The only limitations I might encounter is that there will be strobing in my final production.
Strobing is when the frame rate isnt quick enough and Persistence of Vision doesnt take
place and the film looks to jagger, meaning the movements dont look smooth.

Subject
What will the subject of your animation be?
The subject of my animation is to advertise Lego as a product and stop motion animation. I
will do this using stop motion techniques and using products made by Lego. The main
subject will be the Lego men and the Lego in the production as they are always in shot. This
is a good advertising technique because it is all the audience can see, the product.
Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
There will be loads of Lego scattered across a Lego platform. Using stop motion the two
characters build themselves and start to clear from the rubble where they meet. They then
find some building blocks and begin to pick up Lego bricks and place them onto the platform
in which they stand. They grab certain parts to place on the board. The camera angle
changes from a close up to a birds eye view to show what the two are beginning to make. It
then switches back to the other camera as they carry on grabbing pieces to their structure.
Using stop motion I will have to move each of their body parts very small amounts each time
so the movement is smooth when I come to editing this piece. Once the two have built this
structure they will climb to the top using help from each other to stand on what they have
made, at this point the camera will change for one last time and the final letters of the word
Lego will appear and the advert will end having advertised the product. Once this is done
the characters get a close up for a final wave goodbye.

They will be made of Lego, this is due to the ability of armature that they have when they are
built.
Movement of characters
How are you going to make your characters move?

As I am using Lego which has adjustable arms and legs. This means using the technique of
stop motion I can give them an effect of motion by moving these parts of their body. Stop
motion gives an object motion when there is none.
What is the purpose of an armature?

Armature is used to make the movements of an object without it losing position, it also
makes the movements of that object look more realistic and smooth. It is in some ways a
skeleton for the model in which it gives it human arm and leg movements. It is mainly used in
clay models to maintain the shape of the character or to work around the skeleton of that
model.
Will you use them for your characters?

My characters are made of Lego and will therefore have their own armature.

Mood board
Create a mood board showing what look your animation will have. Add images showing
ideas of mise-en-scene, characters, costumes and colours that will be present in the
different shots.

must be more than simply adding a track.

My audience will be interested in Kids TV and Toys. Lego is a toy for kids and therefore the
advert will be aired during the time of Kids shows, because it is what they are interested in.
What forms of animation might they already watch?

They will watch things on Cbeebies such as Shaun the Sheep and Thomas the Tank Engine.
These are not all Stop Motion. Shaun the Sheep made by Aardman uses stop motion to
create its episodes whereas Thomas the tank engine is solely animation and done on a
computer.
What images do you think they enjoy watching?

They like to watch kids tv such as Power rangers and programmes that involve building
things and being creative. Another is Bob the Builder, this is a film which inspires kids to use
Lego.
What might they consider distasteful or offensive?

Bad language is a big no when making this production. Small children should not be
exposed to bad language.
How will you ensure that your animation will suit your chosen audience?
My animation is all based on Lego. Children love Lego and if they see characters moving
they will be drawn in by this. I know that my advert will suit my target audience as Lego has
been a part of most childrens lives for decades. With a new type of animation being used to
advertise this product I think that my animation will not only suit my audience but advertise
the product to a new level.

They will see my production online on YouTube, this will be as an advert before their chosen
video starts. It will also be available on the search bar for people to re watch the advert if

My production animation will be 30 frames per second, this enables me to make the
movements of my characters smooth and look good.

I will be taking my photos in the studio at college.
Does it have natural daylight?

There is no need to block out the natural light as it is such a small amount that it does not
affect my production or the artificial light that I will be using.
Do you have a constant light source(s) such as a lamp?

There is studio lights which are always available for me to use. There are portable lights and
lights which are already in place.
Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?
There will be no shadow and they will be placed in front of the set on a low setting. Low light
setting makes sure the light isnt too intense and allows no shadow.

Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-byshot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
A dope sheet is usually split into 5 different sections.
To indicate what action occurs on which frame number

To see what action is happening in this shot.
To see what dialogue used in this scene.
To show what level of animation is happening.
To give camera instructions (angle).
For example;
Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
