CLASS: Form 3
TIME: 10 mins
PERIODS: 1
UNIT: Nature of Matter
TOPIC: Sublimation

Chemistry For CSEC by Chapman, Luttig, Murray, Ritchie, Tindal
Active Science by Roger Bala
Chemistry For You by Lawrie Ryan

PRE-REQUISITES

Knowledge: - students should know that:

1. Matter is made up of smaller particles or molecules.
2. Particles can move.
3. Matter can change from one state to another via the addition of energy.
Skill:- students should know how to:
1. Make accurate observations and work in groups.
2. Use simple laboratory apparatus.
3. Heat substances using a boiling tube.

MATERIALS & RESOURCES

For Teacher

For each group / student

white board, markers, handout, projector, laptop,

Boiling tube, ammonium chloride, sodium
chloride, Bunsen burner, boiling tube holder,
spatula.

Boiling tube, ammonium chloride, sodium

chloride, Bunsen burner, boiling tube holder,
spatula, dry ice.

CONCEPT OR PRINCIPLE

Matter can be changed from one state to another by heating or cooling. Sublimation is the process
whereby a solid changes directly into a gas and vice versa. Sublimation can be used to separate a solid
which sublimes from a mixture of solids.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, students should be able

to:

Classification

Learning Type

Define the term sublimation

Knowledge

Cognitive

Explain how energy affects the movement of

particles during sublimation.

Knowledge

Cognitive

Demonstrate how the process of sublimation can

be used to separate a mixture of solids.

Application

Cognitive

PROCESS SKILLS

During this lesson, students will be engaged in:

Identifying / formulating a problem

2

Designing and Planning an experimental procedure

Setting-up and executing experimental work

Observing and measuring

Recording of data and observations

Interpreting and evaluating data and observations

Communicating scientific ideas, observations and arguments

Applying scientific ideas and methods to solve qualitative and quantitative problems

Decision-making based on examination of evidence and arguments

Extracting from available information data relevant to a particular situation

ACTIVITIES

Introduction:
ENGAGEMENTTeacher would ask Ss if they ever observed the ice-cream man having to stop and drain any melted
ice from his cart. Teacher would initiate a discussion in which the Students will discuss based on their
previous knowledge the changes of state of matter.
Teacher will then present the students in groups with samples of dry-ice and would ask the students to
make observations in the changes of state of matter that is occurring.
Students would be expected to state that the change of state is from solid to gas and no liquid state is
present.
T will tell students that this process is called sublimation and this is the title of todays lesson.
DEVELOPMENT
T then asks students to recall their knowledge of the effect of energy on the particular state of matter
from solid to liquid to gas. T then asks students if they think that compared to ice if dry ice has
stronger or weaker bonds since there is no liquid state. T then explains sublimation in terms of energy
and its effect on particles.
T then tells students that sublimation can be used to separate mixtures of solids. Students are then
asked to perform a simple experiment in groups as laid out by the steps provided in an activity sheet.
3

Students are asked to make and record their observations and present it to the class.

EVALUATION Students are asked to complete a worksheet

T recaps main points of the lesson.
Assignments:
Students are asked to research some modern day uses of the process of sublimation.
Contingency: YouTube video of dry ice subliming and candles if Bunsen burners are not
available.

ACTIVITY SHEET
Make sure that you clear your desk removing all paper and books and then perform the
following activities.
1. Add one spatula of sodium chloride and ammonium chloride in the boiling tube
2. Attach the test tube holder to the boiling tube and heat the tube on the Bunsen
burner for half a minute. Ensure that you do not point the boiling tube in the
direction of any student.
3. Note any changes that you observe.
