Family farms, homes and entire populated towns were submerged by the water that
flowed from the Catawba River to create Lake Norman.
The larger mills were demolished before the flooding, however homes, cars, roads along
with machinery from these mills are still under water.
Duke Energy
Landmarks, power plants and parks have been created by Duke since their
creation of the lake.
Lake Normans history dates back to when Duke Energy began.
Continues to be heavily involved today.
Duke Energy sent a request to repair a rusted, leaking pipe. On December 11,
2014 they received approval from North Carolina to dump Coal Ash (containing
lead, arsenic, thallium and mercury, along with other heavy metals) from the
Marshall Steam Station into Lake Norman, (Charlotte Observer 2014).
This triggered many residents to protest Duke because they believed it be causing
contamination to Lake Norman, which is also used for drinking water.
After this dump of coal ash, a bill was passed forcing Duke to shut down all of its
ash dumps by 2029.
