Important Facts

Frederick Douglass was born in Maryland (a slave state). He was the property
of Hugh Auld.

He learned that reading was very important early on in his life because it gave him
new ideas, dreams, and skills. He also read the Bible to practice reading.

He gave poor white boys bread to teach him what they learned in school. He used
chalk on brick walls and wooden fences to practice his writing.

Douglass used his freedom of expression to give powerful speeches, write a story
about his life as a slave, and start an anti-slavery newspaper called The North Star.

Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony wanted to win justice for all people
including men (equal rights), women (suffrage), African Americans (end slavery),
and all other Americans.

Douglass used his job as a shipbuilder to escape from slavery on a train. He


dressed up as a sailor and borrowed papers from a free African American sailor. He
tricked the train conductor.

Douglass settled in Massachusetts with other abolitionists after visiting Great


Britain for a while to earn money to buy his freedom from Hugh Auld. He was
finally free in 1846!!

Douglass hid escaped slaves in his house in Rochester, NY because he was a part
of the Underground Railroad.
